If the valve covers are bolted to the intake and if the pushrods are running through the intake its a mid size ford motor 332-428.If it doesnt have a huge intake then its a 429/460. A c4 would be a good choice for a trans but they wont bolt up to a mid sized FE or a big block. The c6 trans is huge and you would have to do some serious trans tunnel cutting.
Heres a pic of my 428FE does it look like this?

Not an FE, those Y blocks had the dipstick coming through the intake, an FE has it out the PORT (drivers) side front of the engine...

BTW dan, did your 428 have that nylon-coated timing gear on it? If so how much of it was gone? Replaced mine after I found out what the nylon crap was in my drain oil, pulled the cover off and there was the aluminum part of the gear with no nylon and about a mile of slack in the chain, replaced with a summit double roller set 0*, might mess with the timing EVENTUALLY...

well my dipstick is right in front of the manifold and i dont kno much about a Ford engine so if i could get some info on how to shave some crap off the front of it that would be great, like if i could get sum the stuff inbetween the block and the fan taken off. i dont have emission testing here so what ever can be tossed id be happy to get rid of... and as for a radiator im thinkin about mounting it in the box. maybe an electric fan?

When I bought my engine it didnt have a cam in it so I dont know whether it had a nylon gear in it but the crank gear was metal.

Are you saying this motor is a y block? Its either a 322-428 FE or a 429/460.

Also count the valve cover bolts
5 is an FE
6 is a 221-351w
7 is 429/460
8 is 351C 351M 400

Then just drill a big hole through the block, hook a big chain to it and use it to anchor a boat, and go get an SBC - preferrably a 350 4-bolt....lol

I bet there's a few guys around here that might know where to get your hands on one cheap. Post a WTB in the classified section and see what happens.

Ya might even be able to swap that f-word engine for one. A lot of guys here drive f-words for work trucks...but they'll never admit it here...lol

332-428 is a FE

429-460 is a 385 series

And there are bell housings to fit C-4s to the 385 series engines.

Heh build what you want as the only real thing Chevy about our LUVs is the import name.
