One item I have not been 100% sucessful in finding is the proper size o-ring for the block heater. The one I am using now is from the local Caterpillar dealer. They have a nice selection of o-rings and I found one close although it does fit tight. Also any ideas on the sealing of the small retainer screw in the middle?

I have found a large selection of O rings at Ace Hardware or Home Depot. Though I have never had a problem with the screw leaking on my block heaters, if one was to do so I would seal it with Permatex high temp RTV, the red stuff, (after removing and cleaning the heater).

Thanks for the reply. The O-ring would need to be able to take not only the temprature of the engine, but also the block heater itself.

The engine block is not very hot where the plug is (relatively speaking) as the water jacket is right there. The brass plug and O ring should never get hotter than the temp of the coolant which is flowing through rubber hoses.

Why don't you just buy a new block heater? I find the stock ones break too easy.

I have had one on back order from NAPA for 40 some days. Keep the old one for a spare.
