ok so heres the deal my '79 2wd luv was making a clattering sound in the 2.5-4k rpm range, and was near impossible to do more then 4krpm, so i checked the valve springs. i also thought maybe my timing was off because i idle around 1.5k, so i got out my light and turned the distributer till i was at 6BTDC, this dropped my idle to right below the 1k rpm mark. So i got in to test it out and every time i put my foot in it, it would back fire, and it felt very sluggish, but i was now able to take it past 4k rpm and there was almost no sign of the clattering noise. i checked my Haynes manual and it said to set time with the vac advance plugged, so i tried this again setting it at 6BTDC and as near to 900RPM as possible, i reattached the vac advance line and went for another test, my idle was back up around 1.5k but now i had snappy throttle response and it only bogged slightly when the secondary opened, alto now i had the same problem as before where i cant do more then 4k RPM without my engine sounding like its going to fall apart... I'm stumped, i have checked, tightened, rechecked, jiggled, wiggled, and finagled every thing, i even dropped a few f-bombs and still don't know whats wrong.

some more info about the truck

It has a stock motor with new spark plugs, plug wires, distributer cap and roter, a weber 32/36DGAV and is equipped with a/c.

Thank you for stopping in and reading

Did 79 still have points?
If they did you probly already changed them seeing as how you did all the other normal "tune-up" parts.
Same for the air filter.
Maybe advance the timing a few degrees?
My Weber carb adapter worked loose even with threadlok & it ran like crud.

:? My $0.02

actually i still have the points setup, and i haven't checked to see if it was worn  guess i should prolly do that, the filter is fairly new, but i was thinking about using some rtv on the adapter plates, i know some people despise it but i cant think of much else to keep that seal air tight... thank you for the input

Check the vac source to your dist. as it sounds like you have manifold vac. going to it in stead of ported vac. Are you confused now.

Manifold vac. will make the vac. adv .come on at idle but when you step on the gas it will drop and your timing will retard to you static setting.

Find the ported vac hose ( no vac until the motor revs up) set your timing then hook up the hose. Now your timing will adv like it is supposed to and you will be able to rev it up and get better fuel milage.

Hope this helps.

While I'm betting TJ has the proper diagnoses, you may want to also check your puel pressure.

I installed a Weber in mine a while back, I added a pressure regulator after I realized the stock pressure, being way more than the carb needed, was causing fuel to end up in my oil pan, not to mention the crappy mpg I was gettin.

So, I added a regulator ran it at about 3.5-4 psi, looking good. Tried to cheat it back a little thinking "I'll save even more gas $$", well, everything was fine just puttering around town, but any time I'd hit 3rd and need any more than 2700 or so rpms it would bog down, and forget about hills....

So I currently have it set back to 3.5 with no bogging.

thank you guys for the tips, unfortunately i cant test it yet, after i changed the gaskets between my adapter plates i had a problem with a stud being to long to properly seat the carb so i started to tighten it down and cracked the plate  im not to mad tho i wanted to switch to a single plate adapter anyway, this will just speed up the process

Just an update i just got my adapter plate for my weber, and boy what a difference it makes. i dident realize how much my old plates were leaking 8O ... it only took a few minutes to get my carb tuned and has noticeably helped when i put my foot in it. . it is starting a little hard and i checked a plug... there pretty scorched must have been running to lean with all the air getting in through the plates... i do want to thank you guys again for the help

p.s. here is the link to the plate if anyone wanted to know http://www.webercarbsdirect.com/100_099_p/100.099.htm
