well i just got my headers and intake for my 82 f-150 ordered. Whith this stuff and running a 400cfm webber pregesive 2bbl carb on it i should be raising the hp by 25%. That means that 4.9L inline 6 should be making about 150hp and 263lbs'. Its going to be awsome! 8)

That 4.9 was probably the best engine ford ever made. Great inline 6, but it's still a ford.

Ford or not, inline 6 motors are the most smoothest running engines. With the right setup, they will get up and go!

I don't know about "Ford or not" but there is something about the sound of a well tuned (even a built) straight six. My mom's rig when I was a little kid was a 51 Chevy pickup and I learned to double clutch and shift a two speed rear in my Dad's 50 cab over deuce and a half. Both of them were powered by a solid old Chevy stovebolt straight six 235. The cab over never complained even pulling six or eight ton of grain or hauling a D2 Cat around. It was still running on all six cylinders even when one piston had a chunk out of the top edge, was missing one ring, and the second was broken. Smoked like a burning oil well, but it didn't miss. The same motor ran solid after just replacing the piston and cutting the groove out of the top of the cylinder wall. Dad still hauls farm machinery around on that truck. The 51 pickup has been parked for the last 20 years, but I bet it would fire right up with fresh gas and an oil change. Actually, that gives me an idea for something to do next time I go visit the folks....

My girlfriend from years ago, had a late 60's Rambler 4 door that had a inline 6. When she bought it, it was in neglect from the previous owners. After going thru it and fixing stuff and tuning it up, it ran sweet! Sitting at a stop light you couldn't tell it was running. And it had really good power. The 3 speed column shift was a drag.

I had a 72 chevy p/u with a straight 6 when I was in high school. I beat that poor motor day after day and it held up. I had to put a clutch in it ever summer though. Stock clutches dont hold up to repeated dumpings. It was the only way I could spin the tire.

some of you dont quite understand the greatness of the 80s fords for off roading. The way the front end end works is its like a solid front axle that has been cut in half and then mounted on bushings to the frame. This provided more suspension flex than a solid axle yet is alot stronger than IFS. That and the 300 straight six is a killer motor.

I would also get a cold air induction system also. They bump the horsepower up about 10 to 15 horses
