i have a 89 s10 rear end, with the open rear i wont be maximizing traction. what cars can i search for in the junkyard to try and score a interchangable posi carrier?

i have heard some stuff about some s10 rears having a posi like mechanism, where once the one tire starts spinning 2 "fingers" lock up the gears and hence a posi like effect. But this is totally unconfirmed.. just teenage babbling lol

:EDIT:

is this what i am to be looking for?!?

That is a gov-lock. it will work ok for low power levels. When that thing breaks expect to replace everything in the rear. If your puttin down any power go with a clutch and spring type.

It's sorta like the governer in a turbo 350. the differeial in tire speed allows it to apply pressure to the clutch pack. if there is no difference than it is like an open diff. One tire has to spin for it to engage. Here is were the problem lies one tire spinning up to a certain mph and then it can engage. the off-road guys break them alot. I've seen lots of them in the scrap metal pile.

Anthony, call Jim's Drivetrain in Garden City to see if he has another posi for a S10 rearend. He just built one for me and I thought the price was good. I bought the posi unit and after market stronger axles from him. I thought the price was very fair. And yes the S10 rearend is the same rearend they put under the cameros. I just got tried of looking for a posi in the wreaking yard. Jaloppy Jungle has good prices on rearends, if you can find a posi. If I could find one the gearing wasn't right so I just built one to my liking.

in the glove box there should be a sticker with a bunch of 3 letter/nuber codes. these are the rpo codes. if you have a posi rearend there will be a "G80" code. if you have that code you have a posi.

check this site out to find out what all the pro codes decode to

Yes the one you saw on Ebay will work. If you don't know how to set up a rear end, have a professional do it. You will probably have to buy new axles. The G.M axles out of S-10's, Blazers, Bravado's ect. with posi should work, and you can buy them at a salvage yard. You need to know what spline axle will fit. Have new bearings pressed on, and new seals. Be sure and take the old axles with you to the salvage yard and get the right length. This combo is the cheapest way to get you on the road with a posi. If you are putting down lots of power and running slicks it will break. G.M. wouldn't put them in their vehicles if they were too weak, but if you are four wheeling and slamming them hard, buy something that will stand up to a lot of abuse.

Hotrod80 is right. If you have a new or rebuilt posi the centrifical force happens instantaniously. That's when you see two distinct tracks after a burnout. The wheel still has to spin some to lock it up. If you want total lock up, get a spool.
