well all I need is a cam bearing driver and a valve spring compressor and I can slap this bad boy together! getting really excited to see it finished, then I need a transmission and transfer case for mockup.

have been working out a new wiring diagram probably half done with it, keeping whatever I can and making all new sections where I cant. keeping stock 4 position blinker/hi/lo switch, wiring connectors and such, going to make the front fender running lights blink with the blinkers and other small things like that while im in there. shooting for august to have it running, my brother is coming to visit the 16th so if its not done it will be soon after.

have any of you guys found a heater blower motor from this century that fits decently? mine is noisy and doesn't move much air. when I put it back together I am rerouting the system to cut out everything but the defogger and floor heater, no point in vents when you can roll a window down.

hoping to pick up a cam bearing driver tomorrow and start assembly on the motor

Why do you need a valve spring compressor? Shouldn't you have the heads milled, values refaced, guides checked and spring pressure checked by a machine shop?

Next question, does the S-10 transfer case have the output drive shaft on the correct side as the LUV axel input?

yessir I should, and i would if I had the extra $$$, im sure I will at some point when I start hopping the motor up. the plan my dad and I made is to disassemble them, take some lapping compound and work in the valves to make sure they seat well, install the new valve stem seals I picked up and new valve springs and cross our fingers

no the s10 case is for driver side diff im buying the trans without the case and hunting down a psd np208.

if you do nothing but lap the valves in you will have too wide of a contact point on the seat. If you don't have time and money to do it right the first time do you think you will have it the second time?

when I get back into the motor the second time it will be tax return time when I have some more money to pour into it. if the seats do require a grind I will get it done but if they are in good enough shape to lap them for a good seal I will for the time being.. stupid question but what do you mean by they will have too wide of a contact point and why is that an issue? im not very well versed on extreme detail in that area and its nice to have input from people who know what they are talking about

picking up trans tomorrow afternoon, power by ace 4.3 mounts get here Monday and my cam bearing tool gets here Tuesday should be a productive week :ebiggrin planning to do a quick mockup once I get the trans and mounts to see where it will sit and where I will need to cut the shifter holes before I assemble the short block while its still light

anyone know if pacesetter headers clear on a 4x4? if need be  I can remove the torsion bar and run coils. picking up a welder in a couple weeks

What I mean is the valve seat will be ground down with lapping compound and the seat will be too wide where the valve comes in contact. It's not a good thing. I don't understand this "lets throw this together then tear it down later and do it right" mentality. A valve job on a V6 around here is not too bad at all. I hope the rest of the truck is not just slapped together enough until you come back to do it correct later.

picked up my transmission today, aluminum case ended up being lighter than I was expecting, gave it a quick blast with the pressure washer. its in the mid 90's the next few days so im going to be working on it in the mornings and nights all week this week.

the heads are the only thing I was considering half assing, im doing my damnedest to get everything put together well enough for daily driving a few months when I wont have to pull the motor to get to the heads. if the valves seal I might as well run them, im focusing on everything around the engine to get it back on the road while the engine is being built to run with new everything but heads and when I have the money for a full rebuild on them with roller rockers and ls2 beehive springs I will do so.

Power By Ace mount kit arrived today :ebiggrin
Image
got my work space arranged so I can rebuild my engine and do my test fitting without shuffling everything around. checking bearing clearances tonight, pushing the old piston pins out and getting my rods cleaned up. my uncle is going press the new rod pins in for me. staring the major assembly tomorrow when I get the cam bearing tool and get them installed then I can put the block up on the stand
Image

Edit:
I bolted up my new mounts in the truck and on the block for a quick mockup
Image
bolted the oil pan up to the bare block to see If it will need to be modified
Image
it looks like it belongs in there! oil pan clears all around I can slide at least a finger on all sides of it
Image
so much room in the front 8O even with the water pump and timing cover it will be plenty of open room
Image

had a couple hours on the 4th
rolled the truck out into the driveway and had my buddy bring his pressure washer over
sprayed out the engine compartment, front suspension and the transmission tunnel
Image
cutting the battery tray out tomorrow, and am going to cut out the transmission crossmember so I can fit the trans and see where I need to cut the new hole
Image

took the pressure washer to the heads too, blasted out the water jackets and the ports, up around the valves and such. picked up a valve spring compressor from my dad so I can pull the springs, clean and lap the valves and install ls2 beehive springs, popped them on the block to see how everything looked cleaned up, looks better than the g180 to me by at least a little bit..
Image

ran a tap thru all of the head bolt holes, main bolt holes, oil pan and timing bolt holes and ran a flexhone down the lifter holes and the distributor just for a second to remove any slight burrs.
Image
popped in a couple of the freeze plugs before I took off for the fireworks
Image

that's all for now. will post again when I get the crossmember out and make some progress on the interior

ordered my cam from compcams today
went with the 270HR
http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam- ... d=560&sb=2
talked to one of their techs and this one was right where I wanted to be, not really lopey at idle and will work well with the 97 vortec heads, holley 450 carb, edelbrock intake and headers/full exhaust. should be here in a few days and I can finally get the block assembled the rest of the way. :ebiggrin

small update
drove in the rest of the expansion plugs
Image
popped the block up on my stand for assembly now that the new cam bearings are in.
Image
used some carb cleaner and a no fuzz rag to clean the rust preventing coat off the crank
Image
got the main bearings installed and plasti-gauged, each one has clearance In the middle of the acceptable range, same with end play, its good to go :ebiggrin
with that done broke out some more assembly lube and torqued down the main caps
Image
I need to pick up a piston ring compressor and I will be able to finish the shortblock. ordering valve springs this week and then I can pop the heads on. going to break out the dremel to gasket match and smooth the intake ports and water jackets while I have them off to lap the valves and install the new springs

I don't know where you are building this engine but I would NEVER set my crank on the ground in the middle of a yard of dirt.

hence why its being held onto and set on a clean piece of cardboard I had just set there to keep it off the dirt... I didn't want to spray a bunch of carb cleaner in my garage so we took it outside

going to go to picknpull to scout around for a trans tomorrow and will go pull on sunday if I find one I want.. building the rotating assembly Saturday got my ring compressor this morning, will have everything from the deck down installed over the weekend, just need to do a mild gasket match and open up the water jackets a bit in the heads and they will be good to go. ordering the valve springs next Friday with the intake manifold and carb
