So after killing the Coopers i had on my truck i decided i dont want a bias ply tire. So i ponyed up and bought a set of 27x9.50R15 SSR Swampers. All said and done it cost a few over $600. I get on the road and honestly they dont ride much worse than my old coopers did. They are smooth all the way up to 70mph. And they dont even howl that much, at 30mph (most my driving) you just hear em humming a little bit. Roll up the window and its gone. So far i have run Coopers Discoverers, BFG A/Ts, and bias Swampers. As far as im concerned SSRs are the only tire for a daily driven truck that still sees time in the dirt.

I'll just throw it up here, not to agree or disagree with MEPR, that if anyone doesn't know, Big-O tires (Big-O branded) have a very good road-hazzard warrenty. They are generally very reasonable about givng you new tires, even if you're an offroader. Hidden cost? Where most tire places charge very low rates, or sometimes nothing for mounting/balancing, Big-O charges you- about $20 or so I think. Even still, $20 to mount the replacement tire is a helluva lot cheaper then $150 for a new. Not sure how good any of their A/T tires handle off the road, but they're cheap! *shrug*

That's curious. I thought Big-O mostly was the only one to do that (except sometimes a promotional offer that may come up). Do you know the legnth of the warrenty? Also, have you ever dealt with the warrenty after popping a tire off the road? I can only go by what I'm told, but Big-O gives a 1 year warrenty and supposedly will nearly always give you replacement, regardless of how obvious it might be that you were taking the vehicle off the road.

Anyway I'm not disagreeing with you, just curious. Many (most) tire companies give you a 30 day road hazzard warrenty, but beyond that, you're often on your own. Big-O gives you a full year (not sure if/what mileage restrictions might exist there).

well i ran 30x9.50 BFG A/Ts and hands down i feel the SSR is a VASTLY better tire. Now i havent had a chance to run these guys in ice and snow yet, so that may be the one place the BFGs have a leg up. But i have run bias swampers on the LUV for a winter (a realy bad one too) and i made it through no problem. You just lean to drive so your tires are hitting slush or looser snow is all

How is rain traction? I presume since you are in Seattle you must have had some by now. :D

rezkid- your warrenty is a tread-wear warrenty. That is if your tires wear out due to a manufacturing defect in the tire, they replace them up to that mileage. When I was working with my Dad, we never told customers about these warrenties because there are so few cases where you actually get anything back on the warrenty. First it is rare for a tire to wear out before its interval in the first place. Furthermore the warrenty is "pro-rated", meaning the more miles you already have on the tire, the less you get. We didn't tell people because then they're mad at us because they didn't get anything on their "warrenty" claim.

When you do get a successful claim, it works like this: At 45,000 miles, your tires wear out, you take them into the shop. The tire place tells you that they'll file the claim IF you get a wheel allignment on the truck. Well you're only going to get about $8 per tire back on the warrenty claim (assuming they all wore out), so you'll get 32 bucks back to spend it on a $29 allignment.

So in other words, if you pop a tire on a rock, it comes out of your wallet, unless you can somehow prove that the tire was at fault, which is very very rare. And when you do, the tire place will take most of it by ensuring that you "need" something or another that you don't want.

At the very least, even if you think I'm mistaken, please don't go slash one of your tires with a knife and try to get it replaced. :D I just don't think it will happen.

Accually not, the warrenty isn't tire tread only, it truely is a 50,000 free replacement warrenty(unless the bozo's at Discount are lying to me, and i'm reading the info wrong)

If the tire popped, it was at fault. You could hit a large rock on a residential street & cause the same damage as hitting one on the trail.

Discount's tire warranty is pretty much the same as "Big-O" (I've never heard of them myself). I had a tire blow out because I ran it w/ a bad rear wheel bearing. It generated so much heat that the grease that had splattered on the tire caught fire (as well as the rest of the grease on the axle) & blew it up. Took the tire up to Discount, they looked & it and mounted a new tire free of charge. The tires were about 8 months old, IIRC.

well les schwab wont replace chunked out coopers is all i know
I have yet to have em in any realy heavy rain. But i was crawling over curbs where the sprinklers were running. I did this before when i first got my BFGs and my coopers, same curb and everything. The BFGs were 30"s and i just did nothing but spin in 2wd, needed 4wd to crawl up the curb. Even when it was dry. The coopers did it no problem and were a 27.5" tire, wet and dry. Same story with the SSRs. So with my unscientific practical testing, the SSRs have better wet traction than a BFG A/T. And the funny thing is that a bigger tire in theory would have an easier time crawling up an obsticle such as a curb. And the smaller tires out performed em. Interesting... :?

I run 38" Pro Comp X-Terrain's on my 02 2500HD and will again when these wear out. I have nothing bad to say about them at all.

You either bought the tire warranty from Discount, or you knew somebody who worked there that could give you the new tire.

As for popping the tire being the tire's fault, that's up in the air. If you banged up the sidewall into a sharp rock it will blow out easily, regardless of how well it's made. Making it the driver's fault for hitting the rock in the first place. Sure, there are exceptions, but they are few. Tires are still pretty well made. especially the major brands. I had a friend who was laying some rubber on a rock one time and blew a tire when it went over a sharp spot. It happens sometimes, but it isn't necesarily the tire's fault.

On to lighter subjects, my Dakota came with Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires. Can't recall the size off the top of my head now, but rain traction STINKS on them. When it rains here in AZ though (yeah, it does rain here about once every hundred years), it is a lot of fun. 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear, roast 'em down the highway at 55 mph.

rezkid- read that warrenty very carefully. I'm not saying I can't be wrong, but be careful. If you didn't specifically purchase a road hazzard warrenty, you probably got none. Most road hazzard warrenties are done in terms of time as well. Like Big-O warrenties them for 1 year. I think Michellin comes automatically with a 30 day road hazzard, but I'm not positive. Memory is a little hazy there, and I"m too lazy to look all of this stuff now, but I did do some research to make sure I wasn't getting things mixed up in my head.

I will quote Discount Tire's warrenty:

Quote:
NFO CENTER
Certificate For Free Replacement
We'd like to thank you for being a Discount Tire Direct customer. We would also like you to know that we are proud of the fact that we offer the best tire warranty in the business. We are the only mail order Tire Company to offer a tire replacement certificate. This certificate covers any type of tire purchased from us, except racing tires. If any tire fails due to a defect or incurs a puncture that cannot be repaired, Discount Tire Direct will replace the tire FREE of charge. This is extremely affordable, and if you use it just once it will pay for itself. How does this all work?

How You Are Covered
In the event one of your tires fails due to a defect or incurs a puncture that cannot be repaired, and there is at least 3/32" of tread depth across the tire, and is less than 3 years from the date of purchase, Discount Tire Direct will replace it absolutely FREE, including the freight to you. This is regardless of how many miles you've put on them. We have been selling this warranty for 28 years. Nobody in the industry can beat this deal!

How To Redeem The Certificate
You have two ways you can redeem this certificate. You can purchase the replacement* tire and we will send it to you by UPS ground service. After you have installed the new tire, send us the damaged tire. After inspection** you will be credited in full for the cost of the tire and the UPS ground freight. You can also send us the damaged tire first and, after inspection**, Discount Tire Direct will immediately send out a replacement* tire at no charge. It's that easy!

Note: The customer is responsible for the freight cost of returning the damaged tire to Discount Tire Direct.

How To Purchase The Certificate
If you have already purchased the certificate, drive confidently knowing you have the best warranty in the business. If you have not, you have 30 days from the date of purchase to buy the certificate. Give our courteous staff a call at 800-589-6789 and tell them you would like to buy the Discount Tire Direct certificate for free replacement. Remember, the sooner you call, the sooner you're covered.

Quote:
* In the event the registered tire (or tires) is discontinued or not available, a tire of similar value will be substituted.

** This certificate does not cover abnormal tire wear. Misalignment, suspension problems, or improper inflation may cause abnormal tire wear. Nor does it cover damage caused by collision, vandalism, or willful abuse.

Big-O Tire goes like this as best as I can find:

Quote:
Limited Free Replacement Warranty for Big O Passenger and RV Light Truck Tires
Every new Big O brand tire bearing the Big O name with serial number and not marked "Blem" and purchased at a Big O Tires store, is warranted against damage or failure due to defects in workmanship, materials or road hazard failure for the life of the original tread. Any such tire, which becomes unserviceable during the corresponding replacement warranty period, will be repaired or replaced free of charge at a Big O Tires store. You may be charged for installation and any sales tax. Should a suitable replacement tire not be available in a reasonable time, the original purchase price, including sales tax will be refunded.

Now do all tire companies cheat in advertising? Yes. Big-O cheats by saying "all our tires come with a 4 year replacement warrenty". IN fact, they come with a 1 year warranty. You can PAY and get UP TO 4 years of replacement. I don't know the price difference between Big-O and Discount, or any of that stuff. If anyone cares to look it up, be my guest. :) I'm not some kind of Big-O sales rep here.

edit: this is much more complete for BIg-O:

Quote:

Yep, bought the warranty from them. It does the basically same thing as a Big O warranty does, I'm guessing.

So it won't cover if the damage if some idiot hits your car and pops a tire, nor if someone slashes your tire, and it won't if you purposly do something that'd destroy your tire, for instance, taking your camry and pulling it on the shoulder of a highway, pulling the ebrake, soaking a front tire with tireshine, putting it in gear and letting it roast itself away.... Every tire warrenty has some clause about this though. It's a little bit underhanded, but it is a good way to put you at the mercy of the tire shop. In fairness, you know that the reason these clauses were probably put there in the first place is because of people out there stabbing their tires out that had 45,000 miles on them anyway... And if you pop a tire when you hit, the hope is supposed to be that insurance will cover that anyway (even though it probably won't).

But yeah. BigO has such a clause too if you look closely, but I have heard they have a good reputation of just giving you tires, and it seems to me to be somewhat less exclusive then the Discount one. Frankly that is probably largely due to the fact that you have to pay them mounting and balancing... I have been unable to hunt down prices on Big-O brand tires, so I don't know if it's cheaper to buy from Big-O, or if it's cheaper to get your tires from Discount and buy their warrenty... It also depends very much on the honesty of the tire place, since you are very much at their mercy with a warranty claim...

It's not that all tire shops (or garages) are crooked- you just have to be careful who you deal with. It always helps to build a relationship with a single mechanic or dealership as well.
