WOW theres a name I haven't heard in a long time is Big O still around???? From experience. They handle like ass both on and off road IMO.
I prefer Goodyear Wrangler Radials or BFD Mud Terrains. Definitely Wranglers for best handling and performance in both situations. as far as warranty and replacement, discount aint bad but yeah I do happen to know the managers of several tire stores. not a problem. Pro Rate $450 on a set that I ran up to 30K miles. Warranty? no questions asked, here's ur new tires. LOL.
San D is pretty much the offroad capital of the US. I ain't never seen a Big O (lol) tire on any race trucks coming off the floor at the local shops. just an observation. offroad racers pretty much take a Wrangler or whatever and have a tire cutter cut it into knobbies anyway. I'll stick with what tire I know works and continue to have my friends replace them at little to no charge.
Go out in the stix and BigO isn't necesarily uncommon. BIgO certatinly is still around. I wouldn't put 'em on my main truck to be sure, but like I said, they have a good reputation for being reasonable with warrenty claims, and the warrenty does come included with the tire. If I thought I was going somwhere I was going to trash a set of tires though, I'd mount a set on some steel wheels and flog 'em off the road.
My dodge came with wrangler RT/S s and I don't like the traction in the rain, although it is fun to roast 'em, and they do hold up well. Since I moved from PA to AZ it is not as big of an annoyance. I don't take it far enough off the road to comment much on how it handles off the road. It's a competant tire in the washes and dirt roads. That's as far as I've ever taken my truck.
I would also add that a decent (safe) tire is the Bridgeston Dueler A/T or H/T. A/T obviously having the blockier tread. We sold lots of them because they're very reasonably priced. Never seen a set go more then about 40,000 miles though. A/Ts wear a lot faster then the H/Ts. No idea how either handles off the road, but they're competent on the road, and aren't proned to tread ply separation (and noise) like so many other cheap tires. For $80 per tire, I always thought they were very reasonable for what you get.
