So, I read somewhere on this board, that the LUV didn't come 4x4 till '79. Did I misread that? I'm thinking of going to seattle on friday and trying to buy it - what do you all think it's worth? Is there a surefire way to check the year? (I belive the 3rd number of the VIN?) Anyhow, if it's worth it, and I can get it, you'll be seeing a LOT more of me. Here's the link to the truck, please, tell me what you all think. I've been reading a lot on this board, and I think you all here seem like some really cool people. :)

From looking at the craigslist pics its not a factory 4x4 Luv, someone has done a sas on 2wd Longbed Luv.

Err...I'm sorta new at all of this, sorry to be dense...what's a sas? I tried looking it up, but there's no definitions...
Also, he emailed me some pictures of the interior, one can see both shifters - the one for the manual transmission, and the other one, for the 4WD - it looks pretty good to me, pretty "standard", (and like they're both old, so if it was converted from a 2WD to a 4WD, it was done a long time ago) - I guess? 'course, I don't know much....
Do you all think it'd still be worth it, even getting a converted 4x4 long bed? or is the risk somehow greater?

Sas is the short term for solid axel swap, stock 4x4 Luvs used used IFS (shafts an cv joints).
If done right the sas will make for a tuff 4x4, if done wrong it will be a accident waiting to happen.
I recomend you take someone with you who knows about sas before you hand over your $.

sased = easy to lift but you might need some stronger drivetrain parts. the one in the picture has a solid front axle, looks like a good deal to me

Thank you both for your input, I'm going to get someone who know what they're doing, THEN I'll learn, after I see what's up. He'll just have to wait, unless someone from this board knows what they're doing, and it's a good deal for them - go for it, I say. The guy that's selling it seems like a pretty nice guy, and he told me on the phone when I first talked to him, that he was going to lower the price to $700.00 since it wasn't selling. I say, if one of you guys beats me to it, then that's the way the cookie crumbles - I won't be able to go to seattle till next week now.

Good call, it must've been a good deal, 'cause the guy had sold it on friday (before I had even left for seattle yet) and now I see the truck again today on CL, but the guy wants $2,000 for it. And doesn't even mention the problems with it that the FIRST guy had. What a bummer deal. I wanted it to work in, learn some new things, and be a LUV owner, this guy is just tryin' to make a quick buck. lame. Ok, enough of me whining, now. lol

Weird, that is the exact same thing I went through when I was tying to buy the truck that 77 4x4 (sas conversion also)now has, was on Craigslist from 3 different sellers for $800 and always sold before I could get a hold of them, then by accident I found it when I went to go look at a 2x4 LUV as the guy was selling the 2x as he had bought the 4x truck and wanted 3x what it has sold for previous and he hadnt done a thing to from the first time it sold it but did point out a bunch of problems with the suspension. 8O

i got it for 1 thousand, since i have had it ti has always been a daily driver i have done a new gas tank new lock ring in front hub new wheels and tires rear gears and rebuilt the radiator. its on craigslist right now not in a hurry to sell just seeing what i can get for trades or if the moneys right. i dont know if any one has checked out the 4x4 pic thread but there are some recent photos of it. if its not gone by summer its gonna get sanded and painted new leaf springs a 350 700r4 and half ton axles of an 84 blazer. if i sell after that the price will go up drastically

Hey Mike, would you be interested in a regular shortbox 4x4?
If so I might have found a good deal for you.
