Hi and hoping someone can help. The transfer case is toast on my 81 Luv diesel 4x4 with a 5-speed. Trying to find a transfer case but I don't know if this was originally a 5-speed because all the ones I'm finding are for 4 speeds. I know the trucks been beefed up but I don't know what the previous owner did to it. Can anybody give me any direction on this cuz I don't want to order a transfer case from a wrecking yard and find out it doesn't fit? Thanks!

And your transmission is from an '86 or '87 Isuzu. There was never a 5-speed 4x4 LUV, because the 5-speed 4x4 didn't come out until 1986.

Thanks so much, that helps! Yes it's a diesel. I'm trying to find out if there's some kind of part number stamped on the transfer case.

There's no way to "order" a replacement transmission or transfer case, unfortunately. And that particular 5-speed 4x4 (the MSG5-T) was only offered for two years, in the Isuzu P'up and Trooper. So used ones are pretty scarce. What part of the country are you in? (Wow, I just assumed you're in the US!)

Only made two years that sounds like bad news for me! We're actually out in Utah. The transmission shop said they can't help unless I find the part. Not sure what to do. I looked on car-part.com and see transfer cases but can't tell what ones might work. At least now I know from you it's a 85 or 85 Isuzu transfer case! Do you know if the 85 and 86 are the same?

Oops, sorry, 86 or 87! Do you know if it matters whether the case I get is for diesel or not? Since mine is a diesel?

I doubt you'll find just a transfer case, but if you do -- that's a good question. 4wd isn't my forté, but I do know that the gas transmission is interchangeable with the diesel transmission, IF you put a good diesel bell housing (that is, the entire front case half) on it. So you can swap the front case half from your diesel MSG5-T onto the gas MSG5-T and use a gas transmission. I did that with my 2wd diesel truck using a gas 2wd transmission.
