A pipe rack erupted in flames at the plant in the 3500 block of Market.
An Exxon Mobil spokesperson said the fire on the above-ground pipe was caused by a power surge around 3 p.m.
A spokesman with the Baytown police department said the fire sent flames 100 feet into the air and caused heavy smoke.
Exxon Mobil's fire department and Baytown firefighters put the fire out.
Exxon Mobile said the plant will continue to experience some flaring.
CenterPoint said 1,500 customers were without power at one time. The number was down to 22 by 4 p.m.
I hope all you Baytown folks are safe.
