cody and lee both have ministarters. they work great and make more room for the exhaust.

I paid $150 but the price may have come down some. 50 sounds really cheap though. Make sure its a 4.44:1 ratio and not the 3.whatever. Hitachi's are good (actually i think they make a large portion of the mini starters sold under other names). JEGs and SUMMIT have their own mini starters too. I've just had the best luck with the CSV

Try to shy away from the ultra cheapie junk china made starters.. I had one and it snapped the drive gear off in the first week. I have been running a Hitachi with no problems.

Okay, heres another question. 1- How many of you guys, that have rplaced a chevy starter ever uses the shims? I have replaced tons in my day, and have never used the shims. So heres why I ask, I just swapped the starter in my truck, and it kinda sounds a little screechy. So I am wondering if shims are in need! A new starter always comes with 1 or 2, but like I said, "I have never used them". Thanks T. --- P.S it took me about 5 hrs to swap my starter cuz I had to drop my passenger side exhaust, to get the old one out and new one in  What a bitch of a time I had!

were using 2 shims on codys truck. when the shims arent used it bogs the starter. the screechy sound sounds like you need some shims.

Well the proper way to "adjust" the starter on a chevy, is to shim it till you can fit a paperclip between the teeth, or I think it's about .060". If you have more than that you can get by, but less and it will drag and burn the motor eventualy.

Shims always move the gears apart, there was a good article on the net about how much to shim with x amount of tooth clearance, you might do a search.

ah u beat me to the paperclip gauge method. I believe the starters actually come with instructs to do that. in any case most new starters don't require shims but if you ever get a remanufactured one where it was surfaced then you may need shims in place of the material that was machined off in order to get the starter closer to the flexplace/flywheel again.

I bought the mini starter too to avoid the hot starts and it ate my stock flywheel (I think it was about gone anyway as the original stock starter was catching at times). I bought the TCI flywheel and now I'm needing to shim the starter too. Like Luvnit, I've never had to shim before. My brother told me to shim ONLY the outside, a friend told me to shim only the inside, I'm leaning on shimming straight across and not just one side or the other. Last night my son shimed only the outside and allowed for the wire clearance (.020 I think) as noted on the instructions and checked it in three different places like the instructions said. Any thoughts on which way is best. Of course I had to pull the motor to swap the flywheel so I want to get everything adjusted before I put the motor back in so hopefully I don't have to crawl under the truck anymore than I have to.
