Due to the all the stereo crap I am putting into my luv, I now need another battery. What is the best way to hook up and charge 2 batteries? I've seen it a couple of different ways but have no clue which is the best way.

do you have to have 2 batteries? maybe you could just get one good battery and get like a delco style alternator. like off of a bigger GM vehicle.

or you might try running the batteries in line. like one battery is gounded to the frame and then the positive from that battery goes to the negative of the other battery that then goes to the starter. then you could run the accesorys off of the first battery in the series and have the second battery in the series for starting the truck. but i think trying to charge 2 batteries with the stock alt will burn it up in a hurry which is why i said to get a better altenator. just my .02

You have two choices.

You can hook them in parallel, both grounded to the frame, and both positives hooked together. This will give you extra battery storage capacity. In other words, it would take you twice as long to run down your batteries. It would also take twice as long to charge them.

Or you can add a RV style isolator that will serve various functions. The isolators usually do things like charge both batteries with your alt, but will only run one battery dead for your stereo and let you keep the other one charged for starting the truck.

Do not hook them in series, battery 1 neg grounded, battery 1 pos going to battery 2 neg, battery 2 pos to electrical system. You will get 24V and fry most everything in your electrical system.

I have a 16 volt alt. now and an Optima Red Top battery. What do you think, will that run my elec. water pump, fan, fuel pump, plus 3,200 watts of stereo?
