My son spent his summer earnings on a Mits Galant with 135k miles. It looks like it was taken pretty good care of. The other morning he was headed to school and his tranny started slipping. It is a 4 banger with front wheel drive auto trans. When you start the car it seems to run fine until you put into gear (even neutral) and then it starts to wine. Put it back into park and everything is ok again. Ok, lets assume the tranny is just bad for a moment. When the wining starts the engine starts to smoke, blue smoke thru the exhaust pipe. Any body remember on the older cars they used to have a vacuum valve coming from the tranny and when the engine start burning tranny fluid you had to replace the little vaccum valve? Anyway the local tranny guy says there is no relationship between the tranny and the engine. It seams to me I've heard where the oil and tranny can mix at the torque converter (idk?)

If anyone has had an experience like this or knows what could be wrong I could use some other thoughts. I can't believe the tranny and the engine went out at the same time, but on the other hand the car probably isn't worth the money to replace the tranny only to find out the engine IS bad after all.

I feel bad for the poor kid, he will be graduating in a few weeks, not to mention the prom and he is wishing his car was runnin.

Yeah, the vacuum modulator would cause the smoke on the older vehicles, don't know about the newer ones.
I'd go to Autozone's website and check out if they have one,and where it's located on that model, then go from there.

Yeah, according to the tranny guy there isn't a vacuum modulator on this model and Autozone doesn't show one either.
Thanks

Not directly related, but I know that Chrylser used the 3.0 Mitsu engine in their minivans. My '99 has one. I'd guess the transmissions would be similar also. Maybe you'll find some info here?

What year is the car?
