I got my luv back on the road again yesterday after a year of changes and being parked. First off it will idle fine and while driving it seems to run fine, but when taking off or slowing down to a stop if im not on the gas it tries to die so I have to feather the gas pedal to keep it running then all of a sudden it just decides to run normal again and off I go just like there isnt anything wrong.

I havent really looked into it yet but if it was a sticky float wouldnt it run rough or not at all at idle? I was hoping it will turn out to be something like the timing being off is that possible? I set the timing but not sure I did it right. LOL IM not a mechanic by any means

What type carbs? Is the linkage progressive? Does it idle on 1 carb or both? If it idles on both carbs, one may be out of adjustment on the float and it's trying to run on just the one, tunnel rams have poor fuel distribution, so that could be a problem at low speed also, especially if both carbs are used at idle. Tthe linkage could be trying to partly open the rear barrels of one/both the carbs or accelerator cam for one or both of the carbs may be incorrect. If it's Holley carbs the idle mixture screws may need to be set/adjusted. Are the carbs new/used? Jetting too big for the engine? Not trying to throw too much at you, just need more info to try to help.

The carbs are Holley 4150s and they are new. Both carbs are linked together so that they are suppose to be working the same. Im not sure why but the last time and only other timeI took the truck out it didnt have this problem.

Check your mechanical adv. to see if it is sticking.I sure hope you are not using a vac. adv. You may have one float sticking and either trying to flood or run out of fuel. Check your fuel pressure at idle and 2500-3000.

How do I know if the mechanical advance is sticking? One good thing going is that I do have a fuel pressure guage and I have 5 to 6 psi all the time. I read an article from a guy that gives out advice and it sounded like from what I read (I will have to re read it again) that its one of the screws that need to be adjusted. Carbs scare the hell out of me and I have 2 so its like double the trouble. Also I havent adjusted the carbs since the new cam went in since the truck has pretty much been abandoned in the garage. If I cant figure it out today or tommorow my girlfriends dad is a mechanic he said he will come look at it.

The idle fuel adj. is on the side of the carbs. To base line gently adj. them in to the seat( all the way in) then turn out 1/2 turn this is all of them as they need to all be the same. Now start the motor (you can do this while it is running)and adj. each one a 1/4 turn at a time. Be sure your curb idle screws (throttle plates) are adj. the same (this is where a carb sync. gauge is handy)But before you start on the carbs your timing needs to be set. The way to tell if the mechanical adv. is stuck is to pull the cap and see if the rotor moves back and forth freely if not then you have to pull the dist. to disassemble for cleaning and lube. You also need a adv. style of timing light so you can check the curve and set the total. Are you confused yet? This is simpler than it seems but you need to do it to make your combo. work correctly.

I set the timing and adjusted the carbs. Cant take it out for a test run until the rain stops but I did put it in gear and backed it up to the edge of the garage and it didnt stumble at all so I hope this is all behind me now.
