I have a sb chevy in my luv and right now the heads are off because I dropped the top bolts for my tunnel ram down inside and couldnt get my magnet to fish it out . I bought a new cam kit for it and now my problem is I dont want to pull the oil pan to get the timing cover off. Any one out there have a solution for the problem? Some recomended that I cut the lower part of the cover and re seal it back up with that right stuff expando foam. Sounds a little bit cheesy in my opinion but since I heard that I was interested in any other ways to do it or if anyone has tried the hack master way how it holds up.

The best way is to drop the pan. You can loosen the front pan bolts to remove the timing cover, but it won't go back on easy. You can trim the corner of the timing cover and seal the heck out of it, but it's 50-50 on whether it will leak. You'll be better off dropping the pan. My motto is "It's quicker to do it right the first time than it is to go back and redo it."

He Is Right, The Best Way To Do It Is Remove The Timing Chain Cover And The Oil Pan. They Do However Make A Two Piece Timing Chain Cover For A SBC That Allows You To Do This Sorta Thing Without Touchin The Pan. I Would Love To Have One For This Very Reason.

This could be the time to put the 2 piece timing cover in, so you don't run into this problem later. From what I have seen you can loosen all the oil pan bolts and take the front ones out and you will have enough room to rip and replace the new one.

Cheers,
Austin

Pull the pan... How certian are you that ALL the bolts fell to the bottom of the pan? A bolt can raise hell on the reciprocating parts. Taking the effort to pull the harmonic balancer to remove the timing cover was some work compared to dropping the pan. And besides, you can inspect the bottom end to see if everything is ok. Making sure the pick up screen is clean, no fine metallic material in the bottom of the pan, anything that looks out of the ordinary.

Running a 2 piece cover on mine right now, but you still have to do it the hard way the first time. :)

Seriously, I was a kid once. We've tried it. It never works. In the end you'll end up dropping the pan anyway.

I Will Be Running One On My Next Build, But I Agree With Ben. You Will Either Drop It Now To Do It, Or Drop It Later To Stop The Leak. Might As Well Do It Right The First Time Right? Unless You Have Plenty Time On You Hands To Do It Over and Over Again.
