Put a turbo on it if you want to have alot of fun. I have a vw in my rail and it has been very reliable. Granted its not a daily driver but we run the piss out of it when we have it in the desert or dunes. The one street one I did have was a 74 super drove it for 3 years was very reliable. All I did was basic maint.. If I remember right it got 18 mpg in town and like 23 on the freeway. It probably could have been better if I didn`t drive trying to push the accelerator to the front bumper.

I restored that one a few years ago. 1600 DP for a while. Then I did a 2054 cc T3 turboed motor. Was too much for car so i pulled it and put it in my rail.

Sold the VW to one of the trainers of the Chicago Cubs.

Heaters in the bug sucks. Driving in rain and snow sucks. Bug stock is nothing to write home about. They are a blast to restore and fairly cheap in parts and easy to work on.

I concur...VWs are high maintenance. I own a 1991 VW Golf which has 140,000 miles on it. It has always been a great car and has never left me stranded but I have really kept up with maintenace.

I would never buy a modern VW...they are junk! We got rid of a 2000 JEtta a year ago and it did not last long at all...even with high maintenance. The motor was pinging when we traded it off for a AWD Subaru. The ping would go away with a bit of oil added to the motor...which of course I added 1 mile from the dealer...:)....she was burning oil....:) Good luck!
