So long story short, I gunned my truck a little, and I mean just a little and soon after I developed a tap  I pulled off my valve covers, and it is coming from the 3rd row of valves back on the drivers side. Standing on the drivers side and counting from front to back, it would be number 5 rocker. So with the motor running and it tapping, I pushed down kinda hard and it made a little pop and quit tapping. So I drove home, very easily and re gooped the valve covers. Let it sit over night and the next day took off to go play golf. Got about 2 miles down the road and the tap came back. If I give it some gas, it goes away but when I am at cruising speed it comes back! WTF???? So, I was told 1- I mashed a lifter. 2- I bent a pushrod, and when it spins it is getting stuck and statrs tapping and when it breaks loose it stops. So I am at a loss. I havnt pulled the psh rod out yet to see if its bent. Gonna do it in the next day or 2 but I was just wondering if any of you guys have had this happen, or if anyone has any ideas. THANKS!!!! T.

I've had this happen to me on my ford when I first got it running and it would'nt stop clacking. It ended up being that almost all of my lifters weren't pumping up all the way.I would drive it and the clacking would come and go and it was very annoying.I threw in some new lifters and the clacking was gone.

well just remember when you start it back up with the new set of lifters, youll have to run it for like 15-20 minutes to break the lifters into the cam. and like the day before you do the job, soak the lifters in a quart of oil overnight and thatll help them pump up faster on initial startup.

oh, also, when your you first start the motor you gonna wanna set the idle to aout 1500rpms for the 15-20 minutes that your breakin in the lifters. basically, start the motor get it running good enought to run for the time and let it run for 10 minutes and the give it a good rev. the let it run for like another 5 minutes and you should be good to go.

i just put a new cam in a car at the school, and thats the same thing i did. when people say to break in a cam, your really not breaking in the cam, but the lifters to the cam. so you doin a cam swap without a new cam.

okay im done. lol

Well, I got the lifter replaced over the weekend, and got things fired back up. Seems to still have a tap from somewhere  Sounds like it is high up in the motor, so I am thinking that I will need to do some readjusting. All I can say, is screw it, I am gonna run it til she blows

I had this same exact thing happen to me on my truck, sb350. Heard the same things about the lifters and push rods. BUT, it ended up being that the oil pump pickup tube shook loose and wasn't flowing like it should, though it still showed pressure. What was it like when you had the valve cover off? If it was running was the oil flowing over the rocker from the push rod or was it squirting? Is it just one or two or are they all the same? If you can run the engine without the valve cover and it isn't making a very big mess I would drop the pan and check that pickup tube. Mine was on so loose that it fell off as we dropped the pan. Check it out.

With the cover off and idling, it just flows, not squirts, but give it a little rpm and it squirts.

That's exactly the way mine was. I haven't taken the valve cover back off since I've fixed it, but according to the mechanic I talked to, there should be enough pressure to run your engine dry of oil in a matter of minutes, or something like that. When I told him that I had the valve cover off without it squirting oil all over the place, he knew something was wrong. I would definately check out your oil pump. Allota people just push the pickup tube into the oil pump as hard as they can because it's real easy to muff it up with a hammer, but it doesn't always force it in enough. They actually have a tool I rented at autozone specifically to drive the pickup tube in the pump with enough force to seat it without damaging it. How it sits in the pan usually prevents it from falling off completely, it just works loose enough over time to effect your oil flow.

I actually used a big crescent wrench. Opened it up enough to go around the pipe, bit small enough to catch the lip, and banged er in. I was real curious why it was so hard to get in

what is your oil pressure is it good? If it is and it keeps getting worse keep an eye for metal in your oil it may be fine shavings and hard to see. but you may have a lobe on your cam going flat. one way to tell is measure the amount of lift on one retainer and compare it to the one that is making noise. a dial indicator is very useful to do that with. chevys use to have a problem with that years ago. If the lobe has gone real flat you might be able to see the difference in how much the rocker moves or how far the nut is adjusted down the stud. But since it just started it shouldn`t be real bad. was the lifter you pulled out concaved on the bottom that will usually indicate it too. just a thought
