hey guys,
quick question hopefully. i'm currently trying to fix my wife's busted exploder. 99 2wd 4.0 v-6. question i have is will the heads off of a 3.8 fit a 4.0 block or is there too much of a difference there. and if there is would the heads from a van 4.0 match up with those of an explore 4.0. i'm searching through junkyards right now cause thats the easiest on my paycheck. i know its a gamble going that route but at-least i'm able to do the work at a lesser cost. any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The explorer had either an OHC or OHV design, which one do you have and what are the specs of the other two vehicle you are looking at? Year, Model Etc.

You might try Junkyarddog.com it is a national Parts request system. you will get an email back from various junkyards that might have your part.

sorry,
explore has the overhead valves. as far as the possible donor vehicles i'm looking at what i belive is the windstars. fords smaller van version. i'm not a total dunce when it comes to mechanical work. but so far the outward appearances of the van engines look like they would work. just trying to do some finger work before i spend the hours removing the heads to find out they don't work.

The explore Used Two Different OHV heads. Depending on Casting Number.

Check this:
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductList ... inder+Head

The windstar used an Aluminum Head vs. the Explorer Cast Head, It also bolts down different.

Hope this Helps...

Good Luck.

i was under the impression that the explorers heads were aluminum. everyone i've talked to including the some of the parts stores, regarding rebuilding the engine have said that the heads were aluminum.
