Typical diesel motors have such high compression that its almost impossible get gas to behave right in them. There are a few exceptions, some old time tractor motors you'd start on gas then switch over to diesel or kerosene after they'd warmed up. I think GM had a diesel motor based on a SB 350 too, likely related/similar to the olds you mention farmerjoe.
Just converting a rig to run on a gas motor would be like any other motor swap. Maybe a few extra problems to fix but nothing really worse than your typical V8 swap.
