In a week or two I will be getting a 2.25" stainless steel exhaust system installed on my 82 LUV diesel. I've had the truck for 4+ years and it's about time to replace that old, lousy 1 5/8" diameter piping. I am using a MagnaFlow 7" round stainless steel muffler and am currently running a K&N air filter. Actually, have been running the air filter for a few months now. It will be exciting to hear how the truck sounds after it's installed. I do know for a fact that it will sound better than the 4 cylinder Honda, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda gas cars that have exhausts and sound like farting going down the road. I think the extreme, best sounding exhaust is a turbo diesel because it has that high whistle every time you shift the gears. Diesel Power!

I've got a 40 series flowmaster on mine w/ 2'' pipe, it's got a growl untill you start to go fast then it kinda fades out b/c of the size of the pipe and the flowmaster is kinda old.

I'm gonna fab. up a header for it one day and either run a straight pipe or a glasspack muffler (to at least make it street legal)

Well I'm set up to get the exhaust installed this Tuesday. I got the MagnaFlow muffler here four days ago and it sure looks nice. It's a pretty hefty muffler and looks like a good performer for the system I'm getting installed. I'll find out how it sounds when I go pick up the truck on Tuesday or Wednesday. Finalman did your truck gain any horsepower with your upgraded exhaust? Did you happen to ever get a dyno-test on your truck and know the exact horsepower? The diesel engine has a factory 58 HP, but I would like to know what's a good estimate of the HP that I would gain from this exhaust I'm getting installed. I'm running a K&N air filter and the company says 10-15 HP increase, but I highly doubt that my truck gained anymore than 6-7 HP. I think the best increase that I'll receive out of the exhaust upgrade would hopefully be an increase of 2-3 mpg on my fuel mileage. But I really can't complain with the current 37 mpg that I already get with the factory exhaust.

well, when i had my stock exhaust i timed my 0-50..... 32 seconds!!!! then I re-timed it just recently (after doing someting special to my intake sys.) it's down to about 13-15 seconds, which i would think would be about 10-20 horse increase (maybe) and my fuel mileage is now 37 to the gal. (and that's stomping the gas and reving at stop lights at friends and idiots in front of me) and i bet I could get about 40+ if i didn't do it...

I also have plans to make a special intake for my truck too, have the regular flanges but instead run pipes off of them into 2 two-pipe connectors, and 1 and 2 cyl. have a cone K&n filter and 3 and 4 have their own filter as well (or another idea i'm trying to design that involves an air box in a certian place)

You'll love your luv after you see how much more power you get out of your diesel, i hope to build mine up to aleast 100hp, if not more one day...

That is some interesting info about your diesel and sounds like those mods are sweet. I really think 13-15 seconds down from 32 seconds is a great upgrade. Do you have any pictures of what you did special to the intake system? After I get my exhaust installed I want to try to compensate for the air flow into the engine and if what you have done upgrades to 10-20 HP, then I am interested to learn. Right now I'm running a K&N air filter under the blue air cleaner housing like a stock air filter. I really think that the upgrade to K&N has only given me a few HP, like I said above. But modifying the air flow from the grille to the air cleaner housing is what will probably gain the most HP. Let me know what you've done and if you have a pic or two just post it.

Actually i used a tube from a gasoline chevy luv to make my idea, w/ some help from my dad.

I'll also post pics of my idea in a couple of days, since all i have is a 35mm film camera.

the circular end of the hose from the other luv has a "lip" on it, cut off this part till it is a flush, curcular hole.

Yank off the "sound-deadening box" attached to the drivers wheel well and both hoses attached to it (leave the rubber/ribbed hose attached to the air cleaner, you'll need the vacuum hose clip so it doesn't get sliced by the fan)

Slide the part of the hose that you just cut over the rubber thingy on the aircleaner, if you want to attach the two hoses you can but you really don't need to b/c the vacuum from the motor will hold it on... or you could use some sort of glue or liquid latex to seal off the seam that's around it so you can keep the pressure going to the air cleaner (did i say pressure??? yep, this tube will act simular to a ram-air sys. when your done)

Now there's a oval looking hole below a circular hole in the radiator support, your gonna stick the oval side of the hose in there and put it in till it fits loosly (push it in past the two little ribs on the end of the hose) mark now pull it back maybe 1/4 to a 1/3 of an inch and mark the hose so that when you cut the hose it will be flush with this hose. Now cut the hose on that mark with a hack saw preferably. Now poke two holes about a 1/4'' apart on each end of the hose (where the curves are) now use some wire (I used wire used to tie flowers together... I don't know it was just lying around) now estimate how much wire you'll need to make a whole loop from the (from bottom side the small hole under the oval one, from the top side the large circular hole) through the small holes in the hose and back around... pull off a little more than double that

Now that you have your two peices of wire double them over, now route them through those two holes in the hose and small hole under the tube till they meet each other, now twist the ends of each wire together tight so the tube has no chance of moving. Now repeat on the other peice of wire through the top side of the hose through the circular hose.

Allowtime for your sealant b/w the hose on the air cleaner and the new hose to cure and dry well so it's not blown out of the seam, and YOUR DONE!!! (now you can make it up steep hills with ease... lol) you can also take off the cover that the old intake hose was under (it's that cover next to the horn and over-flow jug.

Thanks for the instructions on the air intake system. I ended up getting the exhaust system installed 3 days ago and it really surprised me on how it sounded. But for the most part it's still awesome. I'm pretty sure my fuel mileage will have an increase of around 2-3 mpg. I don't believe the exhaust system gained me anything over 10 HP and now I will have to upgrade the air intake system. In the case of a diesel, they throttle on air so the more air I can get then I will see more HP. I'll have to take pictures of the exhaust system when I get a 35mm camera and the pictures developed.

actually the way this diesel is designed it regulates fuel injection to the cylinders, there's no throttle body in the intake at all on our diesels. But i'm glad to hear that you did go and get your exhaust upgraded so now i'll have someone to compare preformance to.
