My Luv is making a "whole lotta torque". Is there a stronger rear end that I could possibly find in a junk yard that would bolt pretty much right up? The first time mine hooks up now I'm pretty sure I will be pushing it on the trailor for the ride home.

you get what you pay for.... you try to go the budget route, its just gonna break on you at some point anyway.

Some people use a Dana 44 scavenged out of a mail delivery Jeep. Some ppl say that the right width Dana 44 can also be found in a mid 90's Honda Passport. a 44 should hold up to a mild small block making 400hp. What exactly are you running for parts in this motor? and what will its main purpose be? Street? Strip? strip only?
I would personally hang a narrowed 9" in it at least.

I have a 350 .030 over, Holley 650, stock aluminum intake from '69 camaro, Lunati cam .470 lift 298/288 dgrees, Headman headers, 882 heads, it had 4.10 gears when I got it but I have changed them to 3.73(couldn't run but 60 mph down the highway), and a 350 trans. That's all I can think of now, I just got the truck about a month ago, it's been a lot of fun already. I took it to the track for the first time last friday night. It was really hard to keep it from spinning for the first 1/8 of a mile, the last eighth was awesome though. lol It's going to see some street driving not much, weekends out for a ride that's about it. Thanks for the input!!

Dana 44 will be fine for your application (approximately 300-325hp). invest in some 28x10 slicks. That will cure your wheel spin problem. probably wont even have to do a burnout either. just pull up to the line and drop the hammer.

I use a 12-Bolt GM rear.

They're strong, easy to find, cheap, and easy to find parts for. It takes a little work to make it fit, but you'll have a bullet-proof rear.

Definetly worth it if you have $100 or so and a free weekend.

I like the sound of a 12 bolt. When it can handle what it's putting to the ground, I'm going to put more to the ground lol. But where do you guys learn this stuff? Is there a book or do you just buy it and say"how the hell do I make this fit?" lol. Can you give me a little bit of an idea of what I will be getting into?

It's going to have to be narrowed.... and unfortunately GM rear ends are costly to narrow. i hang a 9" in everything.

I picked mine up out of the Recycler for $150, had MIT (mechanically Inclined Technicians) narrow the housing for $150, Currie enterprises narrowed the axles for $150 (although you can get nice aftermarket alloy axles already the correct width for about 350 now), letsee..... factory LS 3rd member with 3.70 gears $200 in the recycler. slap it all together and there you have it.

Expect the same for the 12 bolt but add $$ for C clip eliminator kit, new posi carrier if you want to go with any deep gears, posi carrier shim kit for the re-gear. when it all ads up, its about twice as much as a 9"

8" is supposed to be stronger than a Dana 44 or a 12 bolt. I ran one for years in my high school 11 sec LUV. it was alive and kickin the day I pulled it out to put the 9" in.

Go 9 inch, there cheap, you can get them in ANY wrecker yard and you can respline them pretty cheap if the width is not right.

hey i just saw the thing on the mail jeep rear. what gears would likely be in those and does it matter if its a mail jeep or a jeep like a cj series?

Dont remember gear ratios in those things. I will ask a friend about that and how good the CJ5 rears are. My bro used a 44 out of a Wagoneer I think.

yes, a LS carrier. as far as the year and width, I dont remember. we did that conversion almost 20 years ago. after asking around i think your best bet is toing to be a Honda passport or Isuzu rodeo though. They are probably gonna be easier to find and get parts for. CJ's and mail jeeps are getting hard to find.

alot of the mail jeeps came with 4.10 s and a posi to help when they were in bad weather. as far as the cj 5 some came with 44 some had a dana 36 you don`t want the ones with the nut on the end of the axle some danas had that and were pretty weak unless you plan on buying new axles.

Plus some of the 8" parts line the brakes, some of the axles etc. are transferrable to the small bearing 9"

After some looking around I think the maverick rear end is the way to go. So should I just be able to change my yoke on my drive shaft or will the length need to be changed too? I just want to make sure I have enough money put back so I can do all this at one time. Don't like missing to many race weekends.
