Well, since my truck will not be stock anymore, I wanted to start something in this area of the board to document my "mean" 1.8L buildup (V8 guys eat your hearts out :P ). This will be the story and "official" update thread. 8)

I wouldn't put a toyota engine in it. I like the 22r. Don't get me wrong but I would build one hell of a 1.8 to go in it.

UPDATE: The block and head are both in the machine shop. The cylinders and crank will be "mic'd" tomorrow, and the head will be finished when I receive my cam in the next week. A little mixed emotion is derived from the first glance at the cylinders. They need bored (however, this means overboring and that means more power). I think I'll go .040 over like MEPR has. The #4 rod cap gave me some trouble when I was pulling it. this was due to a spun bearing (I hope the crank doesn't need grinding). The total bill looks to be right around $600 for the whole job. Considering all I'm doing, though, this doesn't seem like such a bad deal.

More to come...

600 bones? Thats all? I need machine work to my block and head. Did you have the machinist surface the head and deck the block so warpage won't be an issue? I would hate to see ya put all that time, money and labor into it only to have to pull the head back off cause the head gasket blew

I hear you 'bro! The machinist said that with boring, decking, parts cleaning, and head work (assuming the crank is ok) it would run me right about $250 MAX. I'm doing a lot of stuff myself (low labor cost), though. I also spend a lot of time talking smack with him, so I think he's taking it easy on me...

Thats good. Buy him a beer and tell him he is the only machinist you will ever go to again. That usually makes them happy :D

I'll post one.

My truck will look like this next year. I am still in the process of pulling the driveline, next is the bed, then I start building the bed to match the pic.

Yeah, I was a jackass and didn't get the digicam out before I tore it down. I'm going to the shop tomorrow morning, so I'll take the cam and see if I can at least get some mid-progress pics. Maybe I'll have something up for you to look at tomorrow...

OK, I just came back from the machine shop. I got my peter slapped and am hurtin'. It turns out the head is warped pretty good, and I won't be using it. On the bottom end, the cylinders have already been bored to .020 over and taper to .030 toward the bottom of the cylinder. There is a ridge present that may mean me to bore .060 over 8O to clean it up. I guess I'm going to tear down the other bottom end that came with the parts I bought to see if I can salvage some of the $150 that I spent. Thus far, however, I'm short. Damn, does anyone have a head laying around that they don't need? It looks as if the engine overheated, warped the head, spun the rod bearing, and fucked the crank (I need a crank kit too). Sound like the house that Jack built.

More to come...

Damn that sux. I don't have an extra head right now. I might in a few months, cause I am rebuilding my engine. The donor engine might be up for sale after I get mine done.

I've got a head...But not sure if I need it yet... I haven't pulled my second truck's engine apart yet.

How long does it take to disect the LUV engine?

I've got one on a stand in my garage and am trying to decide if I should rebuild it or just get the one running that is in the truck...

It took me about 2 hours. I am in real need of a head, or this build is not going to happen.

Yeah, I remember. I appreciate it, and you're right, that is a long drive and is the only thing keeping me from doing it (school and all that). Thanks again, and I'll be in touch...
