Like I told you, all LUV's came stock with alternator's with external regulators, so I highly doubt that you have a generator. On your last post about this mytmouz pulled up some posts about pee_roy adding a GM internal regulated high amp alt install.

I went this route, too, on my G180Z
I got mine locally from an auto electrical company I found thru ebay.
They are Collectible Parts & they built me an internally regulated alternator in a case with the same mounting points as my stock 1 so no bracket fabrication was needed.
They do their own work in-house to whatever specs you want & at very reasonable rates, even cheap!
They are in Orlando, FL @ (407) 422 - 7983
http://www.collectableparts.com/contact.htm

And no, I don't work for them, just happy with my purchase.

Whoa...WTF is all of this BS about an generator in a Luv??

Luv's came stock with a 35 amp alternator unless you have a truck with air conditioning which had 50 amp alternators. The voltage regulators are external, mounted on the drivers side, to the left of the fusebox, under the hood.

Plus it's a classic old truck - not an ugly-ass ricer or a freakin' 4 wheeled disco light show...so what's with the neon lights?

Try checking out your connections and your grounds, and clean up your fuse box before you go out and buy anything, and if you need an alternator, try going to the parts store and asking for one.

They have these amazing magic boxes called parts computers, and when you tell them what year and what kind of truck you have, they just push some buttons on their magic box and go get you one off of their shelves.

And while you are there, be a good boy and pick of a manual for your truck and read it.

Well when you're a noob showing up here double posting, telling other people that know what they're doing they don't know what's up, and play with your refresh buton over 500 times just to boost up your post's view count, and ask questions you could easily figure out yourself in a few seconds with a manual or by simply calling a parts store, then you might just expect that you maybe you won't get the maximum amount of respect from everyone here.

And if you don't bother to drop by the introduction section and say hello or say "hey this is a nice site", don't bothering to look around and do a search yourself, don't bothering to check out the info section - but instead just show up demanding that everyone here do everything for you - well where I come from they have a name for that kinda behavior.

It's called rude-n-lazy.

And don't even get me started on the neon lights....

I did not mention that I ran a stock 50 amp (the alt for A/C LUV's as Taz pointed out) with my 74 that has a V-8 with an electric fan, electric fuel pump, stereo and it was fine even at night with all lights on. I believe since these trucks all came with external regulators that you have mistaken the alt for a gen, this is not the case, it is a alt and go to any good parts store like Napa or a large chain parts store like Pep Boys, Kragen etc and get a alt for a A/C truck with your make and model. Before you spend any money, check the alt you have for the amp rating, it will be marked on the case. This site is a wealth of knowledge but please try to do your homework first and with any vehicle this age a manual is a must.

You get the front seat on the little yellow school bus.

But seriously...it is kind of a really annoying problem when people first get a Luv, join here, and don't own a manual, don't check out the info section, or do a search before asking a bunch of questions.

C'mon people...this site has been here for over 5 years, so just about everthing that has anything to do with a Luv, a Trooper, an Impulse, a Pup or any other vehicle whose parts will interchange with a Luv has been discussed already here - some multiple times already.

Plus a lot of folks here have went to a lot of trouble to provide Ben and the staff here with a huge amount of great technical info and a lot of very valuable links to help everyone here fix anything or do any kind of mod to their truck, and it has all been painstakingly added to the site for everyone to utilize - all for free.

So does it really annoy the heck out of some of us that have been here for a long time that we keep getting asked the same questions over and over - usually by people that really haven't made much of an effort to help themselves or make good use of what has been graciously supplied for them here?

You're kiddin....right?

Now I am certainly not saying it's wrong to ask questions here - that's why we are all here - to help and suport each other as much as is humanly possible.

But FFS - if you somehow acquire a 30-plus years old vehicle that is going to obviously need some TLC and regular maintenance, then don't you think spending a few measly bucks on a good tech manual for it would be a real sensible purchase?

And if you are fortunate to find a website that is solely dedicated to that same vehicle, that has had a ton of members that have owned and worked on theirs for over 5 years - then wouldn't it be a wise idea to poke your nose around it, investigate and search all over it for a while, and try to gather as much free info as you can?

I have a ton of respect for Ben and his staff here, and the regular members that show up here every single day. I personally can't think of another site for any other topic that is as well-run, and is as supportive of it's members as this site is.

So to you new people here - please respect all of that.

After all, it's been a long 5-plus years in the making, and a lot of great people have put a lot into what you have been given here.

(This rant is now officially over- and I humbly apologize for hijacking your thread and return your it back to you rizewitdafallen7)

My 1983 Isuzu PF (I-Mark) Workshop Manual also refers to it as a generator.

Maybe the email activation for new accounts should include a short search primer so there's abit less flame-broiling of Noobs.

We were all 16 with a fresh license once upon a time guys.
Ever sent a young'un to the parts store for a left-handed phillips screwdriver or a block strecher?

The word generator is a generic term for generating electrical energy. Specific terms are a generator for the automotive application is for generating DC voltage where as a alternator creates A/C power that is required to go through a diode treeo pack to convert the alternating current (A/C) to direct current (D/C). With a alt you can get higher amperage with less drag. Here is a quick tip in testing generators (not alt's) off of the car. Reverse the polarity on the power and it will spin like a starter, same with a starter, take off the starter solenoid and spin it backwards and it will generate 12V D/C power.

Take this for what it is worth from the source, I am just a dumb ass mechanic who is lucky enough to have a degree in automotive and diesel technologies (BS) from ASU. Some how I have managed to make a great living off of it as well but please don't think I am better then anyone else, like I said I am just a dumb ass greese monkey.

Excuse the ignorance but what's ASU (Arizona?).
I grajee-ated from AASU, that's why I was wondering.
(Armstrong Atlantic State U in Savannah, GA).
My stepbro is a heavy equipment diesel mechanic rather than auto tech he was going to be on the (very) good advice of his Pop, my Step.
He now makes WAAAAY better ca$h than "Automotive Technician" wages.

I hate diagnosing electric gremlins.
Especially on these 20+ yr old vehicles that've had numerous mods done by numerous ppl of widely varying intelligence.

& BTW rize7 - WELCOME! :D
Don't stress too much about getting flamed for asking question #14 on the recurring Q list.
It is annoying to hear, "What can I do to my truck cheap to make it fast" every other week. :?
Hang around, you'll see what I mean.

What makes you think the alt is bad? What's it doing or not doing?
Dummy lights on the dash lit up? Battery flat?

ASU=Arizona State University, you know the one in Phoenix AZ, the Sun Devils. I went on a baseball scholarship but injured myself in spring training so was never able to play for them. Did I mention I was also a Helicopter mechanic in the Army. I worked on OH-58's, or jet ranger 3's, AH-64, Apaches, and Black Hawks or also known as crash hawks. I was released from the Army after desert storm/shield to Ca Natl Guard after we went down hard in a 58 in the desert, I was awarded a purple heart for that misshap.

Glad you made it back & thank you SIR!

When I was in Sav'h I had an Army Ranger (WHO-AH!) nextdoor neighbor from Hunter who jumped into Grenada
& a Gulfstream Aircraft nosecone/raydome(sp?) assembly inspector for a roommate.
I'm an AF brat myself. Dad conducted Air Force bands all over the world.

Have a great 4JUL 8)

Like I said....I'm not saying that any questions shouldn't be asked here, but I guess I was trying to say that each one of us should make a serious effort to help ourselves find everything that is here first.

This site has a huge wealth of information about these trucks, and I was just trying to point out that if each and every one of us doesn't take full advantage of it all, then we are really and truly missing out on a great opportunity to gain a lot of free info that no other site created in support of any other vehicle offers anywhere else on the internet.

So much has been said and done by everyone here, and there surely isn't very much that you can or you may want to do to a Luv that isn't here in every specific detail yet, and there sure as hell isn't a day that goes by that I don't log on and find myself learning something new about these old trucks from someone somewhere here.

Everyone's input here is absolutely valuable, including the folks that are new here, so if I offended any one, then I most humbly apologize - because that sure wasn't my intention at all.

I was just trying to encourage every member here, new or old, (in my own old fart cranky way) to get the most out of what is here that Ben, the staff, and all of the great members here have been kind enough to take the time, effort, and expense to put here for us all to utilize for ourselves and our trucks.

IMHO, this site is the best vehicle support site there is or ever was on the internet, and we should all be proud that we are a member here, and IMHO, we should all be thankful for the day that Ben decided to open this place and let us all log in and hang out.

For those of you that don't know me yet, if I can offer a few words of encouragement or advice to help anyone - I most certainly will as soon as I have a free moment or two.

If I have a part I'm not needin' or using - I'll try to hook you up with it as painlessly as possible, as as fast as I can.

And if I know where you can get whatever you may want or need for your truck the cheapest/best way possible - I'll try to steer you in the right direction, if I can.

But that in itself ain't nothing special - because if you hang around here long enough - you'll soon learn that just about every other member here will do the exact same thing for you - and that is what makes this place the great site that it is.

No offense meant on my part either.
Taz is absolutely correct in saying this 1 of the friendliest forums around.
Some boards I visit are full of whiny, insulting, demeaning posts of incorrect info/specs purported to be fact and advocating illegal &/or unsafe mods.
There is a HUGE library that has been collected over time & categorized by the hard-working, underappreciated admin & moderators.
It can be daunting to a 15 3/4 yr old trying to find out something about his new(old) ride.
All forums I have seen suffer the same fate - the same Q's come up about every 2-3 weeks from a Noob.
Some of the guys (elsewhere) thrash the poor kid instead of simply saying "search", or posting a link to the related sticky.
Don't want to give the initial impression that it's an exclusive clique they aren't welcome around.
I was bragging about the good-natured attitude of this site to an Aussie mate recently and I am proud to be associated with all y'all.
I hope the Noobs will also feel the Luv around this place from the get go. :D
