My full size Chevy has a chrome on plastic grill. The original owner painted over the chrome to give the truck a "Sport" look like the 454 SS. The paint has chipped away exposing the scuffed up chrome so i got a replacement grill. I ordered a Sport style grill and it has a flat black look to it so it needs to be painted to match the color of the truck. Plus if i were to leave it be, the plastic would fade quickly.

What kind of primer or additive would i need to use to get the paint to bond to the plastic? I'd like to avoid the problems i had with the original grill.

well i've seen a self etching primer at auto zone. i haven't used it but that sounds like the type of thing you're looking for. i would scuff up the grill with some sand paper to give the paint something to hold on to as well. too smooth and it will just fall right off. good luck

I couldn't find enough info on the subject so i gave in and took the grill to the body shop. They can do it for about 80.00 and i should get it back on wednesday.

Here are before and after pics of the grille. The bowtie is an aftermarket aluminum piece with vinyl material laid in. I think it suites the truck better than the Sport bowtie that has the red outline.

THat looks a lot better, looks like the original owner didnt prep it very well, I have had my suburban for over 5 years now and that grille was painted before I bought it, it only has a few mincr chips in it that I have had to touch up. I think they look much better color matched!!

I had the truck painted back in the summer of 2K. The chrome was re-scuffed then to try and get the paint to adhere better. But the previous owner attempted it first.
The new grille is all plastic. The Bowtie emblem is billet aluminum with a homemade vinyl graphic laid in. I think it works better with the stripes on the hood than the factory black with red trim bowtie.

Krylon Fusion..
if you have a compressor and a gun then shoot Endura on it... and there is some additive who's name escapes me that will make it set up in 20 min if you're impatient
