If the tranny is out of the vehicle do you have to drop the oil pan to replace the rear main seal?

I want to say no. I'll look in the morning on my spare engine and let you know for sure.

yes you do.
there are two studs on the main seal housing that go through the oil pan lip.

The answer is yes, because the two rear mounting bolts for the oil pan are connected to the seal as well as the whole semi-circular area in the rear of the pan. It's a good thing anyway to clean it all up. It's really difficult to replace the oil pan and a new gasket. You must be absolutely certain to get the mating surfaces clean, and do NOT over tighten the bolts. I'm glad mine's on an engine stand, so I'm putting mine on with the whole thing turned over. I did it already several times under the vehicle, and it wasn't fun. I used Permatex® Ultra Black with a new gasket. The rear seal also has a gasket, Fel-Pro Part #BS40460.

The answer is YES.

Ok, i guess I will be dropping the pan. I will be using a lift to replace my clutch anyhow, so I might as well do it all while it is in the air. I'll do the rear seal while my flywheel is getting turned. Anything else I should know? Thanks again Guys for all the INFO!

 Try drilling a couple of small holes in the seal then use a small lag bolt or a screw then screw it into the hole( sounds kinky huh) and then using the crank pry the screw straight out ,the seal will come out that way then carefully install the new seal i have done this on many a full circle seal as it is a line mechanics short cut.
