Not sure why you don't want to use the Luv engine or just don't have it. I would think a Toyota 20R-22R would be a good engine-tranny option. Keep it carb engine or put carb(s) on it. Tried and true combo. It should be a easy swap.

If I wanted to do something that stood out from the rest, I would use the GM-Olds Quad 4.

You would want to use a RWD setup, so there a lot of options, but the Toyota would be a good one. My 2ยข worth.

A quad 4 would be cool, youd even bee keeping an Isuzu powerplant in there. As far as other options, im an Isuzu pureist so i would sugest a 4Z Isuzu engine, either a 2.3L or a 2.6L. The 2.3 would probly be a bit eiseir becouse most of them are still carbed engines...

There's a company called quad4 rods ( http://www.quad4rods.com/ ) that makes all the stuff you need to build one hell of a powerful quad4...including a bellhousing/clutch setup, a stand-alone ignition system, frontcovers, custom intakes, etc....a little pricey..but well worth the effort.

If you build a quad 4 properly...they are a helluva powerful little bugger. There is a forum devoted to them here: http://quad4forums.com/forums/index.php and they have tons of info about them.

My other half's Pontiac Prand Am has the high performance quad4 in it...and she's already been put on notice that if it get's wrecked or if she decides to get a newer car...that engine is mine.

I used to work with a guy that built a quad 4 up and put it in a little replica roadster that he and his dad built and that thing was fast as can be.

Just my $.02 worth.

I am a big fan of the fuel injected Mitsu 2.4 out of a 91-95 Mitsubishi Mighty Max. Great power and easy to work on, they last as well if not better then a Toy motor.

I'd have to vote for the Toyota 22R (or RE, or RET for that matter) just for the sheer volume of aftermarket support for them. There are so many parts and so many sources that it would make things a lot easier to do than using an Isuzu powerplant.
For me though, I like the idea and the challenge of finding the right parts to bolt in a 2.6L 4ZE1 in without mods. I like to be different though.

Yep...the Quad 4 is loosely based on the old offy racing engines...and built right they are powerful as hell little monsters.

Here's some more links to info about them if anyone wants them.

Here

or..

or...

or...

Here

I also have an article from an old hot-rod mag around my garage somewhere and a bunch of other info about how to build a hybrid engine cheaply using the best parts of all of the versions GM produced that will produce some amazing h/p and torque...and I'll try to scan it it all and upload it to some freebie sight for you all.

I have been contemplating building a Stepside Luv with one in it for a long time...but every time I get some money saved up...something comes up.

With a well-built Quad4, a good solid trans like a GM turbo 350 or a turbo 400 built right, and the right rear-end setup...you could probably scare the hell right out of anyone riding with you pretty darn easily.

well hell if i remember right, the quad 4 was GMs little hot rod motor. i think the base model had 140horse stock, and up to 200 towards the end of its run. so just a stock quad 4 would be a hoot!

Some where in my stack of rodding mags. i have one that shows a little 23T with a Quad4 with a super charger making 400-420 HP and the moved the coil pack to the fire wall so it would look like an Offy motor. These motors are able to make over 400 hp naturally asperated on alky.(sprint cars used them for a few years)and i think they can makeup to 800 supercharged.

My vote would be either a carb'd 2.6, or a Toyota 2.7L 3RZ   150hp and 177tq from the factory...and there are a TON of upgrades avalible for them...and wiring up the EFI is pretty easy from all accounts.

I have the same magazine with the same article. It is pretty impressive, and it didn't look like it was a real difficult build to get that much h/p and torque out of it either.

The only drawback would be that some stuff for doing it all could tend to be a bit pricey, but the results are pretty outstanding. I have seen a few people with some nice tricked-out rides with built Quad 4's in them when I've been out cruisin' around causing trouble, and it left me with a long lasting repect for them.

My wife's Pontiac Grand Am has the 190 h/p high-performance w-41 version in it that was put in by the previous owner, and it is a damn fun car to drive. It sure is pretty ballsy for a little 4-banger, and it still gets great gas mileage.

Since I am a Datsun finatic and work on 510 cars alot and the 620 trucks, I would say the best 4 banger would be the KA24DE or the SR20DE(T). Only because they have alot of aftermarket parts and are made specifically to handle hard use.
