I have bad news. The engine was apparently suffering from oil starvation. The #2 and #3 pistons had rod bearings that were really bad. I also removed #1 rod cap. The bearings are shot. It needs to be all taken apart again. I don't know what I'm going to do, but I'm not pouring any more money into this LUV for an indefinite period. I have to focus on our family's other vehicle, and get it's transmission repaired. I am so sorry to all of you who watched this thread with great anticipation of success, and now it's not happening. I am stopping with the LUV for now.

I also found a dingle berry in the oil pan. I had previously noticed that the flex hone was missing a couple, but didn't find them, even though I looked. One more is still missing. Some of the rod bearings were razor blade-thin, with all of the lead and copper gone already. One of these photos shows a glob of sludge that came from the bottom of the oil pan. It's a mess with metal all through.

I live on disability, and we have used credit to purchase almost everything. I can't keep going as it's taking all my income just to make the payments. I am sorry that this has turned into a failure, but I cannot afford to continue. It has been fun.

Geez...that really sucks dude.

Too bad someone close doesn't have a decent running used 1.8 that they can part with cheap for ya.

At least then you could get it up and running

How about it...anybody on here got a runner they can part with cheap? Anybody able to help a brother Luv-er out?

Even if it's a ways away...maybe if we link enough members together...we could pass it along to him....because we can't have a cash strapped member and his family on foot with a dead truck in his yard...can we?

If we can do this...I'm definitely in.

I'm not rich...but I'll do what I can to help.

I might be able to come up with a good block...it just is missing some external parts like the intake/carb, the exhaust, the smog pump, the starter, and the alternator...but it does run good.

It was pulled and saved as a backup engine from a parts truck after it was tested by a friend of mine...and he doesn't really need it....plus he is always bitching about it being in his way.

No promises...but I'll go twist his arm a bit and see what happens.

Anybody else got any ideas?

Help a brutha out...

Awesome idea... like another poster said, I aint' rich, but will do what I can. We have a few smallish "junk" yards.

Would'nt it be cool if we relayed the sucker halfway or all the way accross the country? :D If it happens and makes it anywhere near me, I'd be happy to run a leg.

Even better, if it were relayed there in the back of LUVs, call it LUV accross America!! I'm tellin ya, that's some Dateline NBC stuff right there. :D

I think what he needs here is a REALLY GOOD shortblock, one that is either newly rebuilt or having very low miles so he could re-use his top end.
There must be something around the Wash/ORE/Idaho areas for him!
Im too far away to assist.
How about you guys up in the Wash area?
:?:

I have a early running engine and trans (72 model) I would be willing to trade off for a crank kit or used short block for John.

If we all kick in a little, that can add up!!!! I'd drive it part way if it was near me but I am on the other coast! :D

john

If you've come back to read this. Sounds like there's some good ideas for help here.

One thing I thought of, if there are several willing or able to help monitarily, maybe John could open a Paypal account, post it and use it to collect from those able to help. A little here, little there...

just a thought

I agree :!:

I proposed a similar idea for him recently.
It's up to him if he will allow our assistance!
Several of us can pallet this up and deliver it to a dock freight shipper.
Cost though is obvious.
Let's see what appears for cores for him.
Luvrv8 has ofered 1 so far.

I 2nd the next post after this one!!!! 8)

I called john this morning to tell him the good news that I had gotten my truck running! Turns out a wire had fallen off and I hadn't noticed. Anyways I was filled with joy, until he told me what had happened to his truck. And Believe or not, I was thinking the same as what most of you have already mentioned.

I know we have all worked hard on our trucks at one time or another and have failed only to try again. And yes, most of us are strapped for cash. But for some reason this seems to be a different situation, at least to me. Here's a man who loves his family dearly, I've talked to him online messenger several times and have met his family. Wonderful people!, and has not only worked very hard, but has shown us all the results with pictures and detailed information. His diligence and detailed analysis of the work to be done and what he has done will be a classic.

Surely some of you that have put V-8's in your trucks or V-6's may still have your older engines that were running when you decided to make the change. While these engines are just sitting around in everybody's way, why don't we do as was suggested earlier. Why donate the engine to John? Would we do this for anybody else, my answer would be, if needs to be done, why not? One of you mentioned Brotherly Luv, and it appears there is more Brotherly Luv in the group than anybody ever imagined. Let's get it going and see what happens. I'm willing to donate a little money to help.

John, our brother needs our help, I'm all for it

Good news!

I got in touch with the guy that has the spare 1.8 block and he is willing to part with it....after I did some tradin' and hagglin' with him....of course...lol

It was a runner and he drove the truck in when he pulled the engine and transmission in my shop...and it's been sitting indoors in a nice dry shop covered with an old blanket for a little over a year and a half.

So all FullaLuv's gotta do is pull his motor, swap his parts over, and put it back in, and he should be up and running in no time.

I also got a few spare parts from him that he didn't need...so with my private stash added to that, I can probably hook him up with whatever he needs to get the job done.

I got a few spare gaskets and other stuff laying around too...so I hope that will help him out.

The only problem is...I got no way to haul it all to him...so we will have to figure a way to get him here with a truck....or get all of the stuff there.

And BTW...my other half won't mind...she has been bugging me a lot lately to clean up my garage anyway...lol

So...FullaLuv...holla atcha buddy Taz.

It may be that fullaluv needs to add his stuff on the engine that Tumwater scored for now and the one he has now can be machined and built as time and funds permit, this will eliminate the transportation issue for now and ensure that he has a good fallback. Good luck and let me know if I can help.
