Last night i was able to finally fix my cruise control on my Chevy truck. I mentioned to Dad that there was one wire i couldn't figure out were it goes. That was my mistake. For 3 days Dad has questioned me about it and has come up with some goofy ideas on where the wire should go. I've already gone that route and determined that any ideas like his were useless but he kept arguing his ideas.
I took a more basic approach about the problem and found that the wire lead connected to a basic looking connector that was somewhat hidden and didn't directly seem to be tied into anything remotely looking like a cruise control system.
With that problem fixed, that killed off the topic of cruise control. But Dad found a new item to bite in to. The cab roof of the Chevy truck has paint fade. Well... Dad decided to do something about it. Using a wet, dirty rag, he washed a 2 ft. section of roof. Dirt streaks could be seen from the house. Then Dad applied liquid wax directly on to the paint surface. A no-no when it comes to detailing. And in direct sunlight!!!
It now looks wose than before and it's half assed!

I guess i'll go and get an estimate on getting it painted again.

Shit!!!... I gained 2 steps forward with getting the EGR and cruise control fixed and Dad sets me back with this wax crap.

I used TR-3 Resin Glaze on the roof of the 1500. It took 2 applications to clean things up. It's not perfect because of the quality of the paint job but it's worlds better than before.
Dad has the idea that if he does anything to vehicles with me watching, he's being honest about it and it doesn't matter that i voice reservations about it.
Now he's bitching about how i should go and get the truck paint redone. He doesn't like looking at it so "I" need to do something about it.

I've been praying for the phone to ring about some jobs i've applied for.

This will never end... I bought replacement door pins and bushings for the C1500. I reworked the passenger side door all by myself and it about killed me! I removed the door so i could replace the spring roller. Getting the door into place and getting the door pins lined up was HELL! That door is one heavy S.O.B.
I tackled the drivers side today and i decided to ask Dad to help me hang the door. His Bulldog approach was too much. I kept yelling to him that the door doesn't open that far out and he doesn't need to lift so hard. Now the leading edge of the door has chipped paint along a 8" section.
And as usual, he dismissed the severity of the error.
I have to take responsibility in asking for his help i was left without any options at that point. I did my best to keep his involvment to a minimum but even then, it had negative results.
I got to go to the parts store now and get some touch up paint.

my dad shouldn't be allowed to hold wrenches, let alone work on a car. i learned that growing up. for all his faults, i still love him, and i'll probably end up being just like him in 20 years.

Just remember this, if you can't get along, you're probably just alike. If you don't believe it, wait about 20 years. 8O

When it come to mechanical endeavors, Me and Dad are at the opposite ends of the scale. Hurried and Half assed is not my plan. I want it build to where i dont have to think about it anymore. Dad thinks fast repairs are cool.
But he's not the the one that will be on the Hwy at 1.30 a.m. in the middle of nowhere with a half-ass repair.
He wont work on his Pontiac Grand Prix, it goes to the dealer. But my cars get his Jethro Bodine repairs. He's a Pest.

And let me tell you something else. Dad has this unwritten rule that if he grabs a tool and cleans any dirt and rust off of it. He'll paint it cause he thinks it needs it. And then it officially becomes his property. I have lost hundreds of dollars in tools to Dad. Dad has all kinds of Craftsman tools now and he hasn't set foot in Sears for at least 10 years. My Dremel tool got confiscated a while back and Dad had the stones to say that i bought it FOR HIM.

Better enjoy your dads while ya can, someday they won't be here. I miss mine all the time. I remember building a garage and he was allready in his 70's and he came over to help. Not much he could do without messin a few things up and I got mad. I regret it to this day. Just remember they are only trying to help and spend time with their buds.

Dad is overwhelming. He'll butt into things that he has no business in. I had to take my LUV truck to Ga with me so i could calmly figure out how to fine tune the motor. I couldn't make any progress with him around. I would set the timing with a timing light and he would follow up and tune by ear cause that's how he did all his motors in his day. He's King Shit when it's not his money in the build. He has no remorse when anything he does goes bad. He'll deny any responsibility on his part and walk away until i fix what he's done. He's a giant kid.
When the day comes that Dad isn't around anymore, it will be devistating. But one aspect as nothing to do with the other.

I told my dad it'll sit in his yard if he starts to try to fix it w/o me knowing it.

I once came home to pick up my LTD with my GF, cause, well, I like my LTD better than a PUP with a 0-60 of a half hour... SO I come home to see bricks and paint cans sitting on the vinyl of my roof, so i'm pissed, so I tell ask them why there's stuff on my car, he says that it's to hold the JB weld down, wtf... he put jb weld in the rips of my LTD's top, so I started yanking the paint cans and bricks off and putting them down and get ready to leave, and he's like "why are you doing that", and I had told him I was taking it when I first got there, so he complains that it'll come loose when I'm driving, so I told him that he should've told me before he started doing it... simple as that.

BTW, the tool deal, gank them back when you move out, judge gives you crap, tell him excatly what happend, and show him some receipts, get you a scratch awl and mark your stuff, make sure you have a way to lock your stuff up too.

He finds little projects to do all day long. Today he half assed a repair on the front screen door. Theres now safety wire strung diagonally across the door to lift the bottom edge so it wont snag as you open it. The rubber wiper strip along the bottom of the door is fixed with "Herbalite". It's thin plastic thats made for wrapping electrical wire bundles to keep them from chaffing on structure. This stuff wont take to sunlight too well and will curl quickly. This is good enough for Dad and i think it's half ass. The Christmas lights kept him busy for 2 days so i have to count my blessings.
He also decided to make a batch of oatmeal cookies today. They didn't turn out well at all. 5-6 bucks of ingredients was wasted so it's not a big loss, but 5-6 hundred bucks in engine parts is a totaly different story!
Dad is also a JB Weld addict! He throws that crap around like it's a cure for Cancer. I swear, if i could find the people that developed that stuff i'd choke them to death. They have made my mechanical life a nightmare.

I haven't posted on this topic for quite a long time. That's because i haven't been in Texas.
I'm home visiting for the 4th of July. Dad has really pissed me off big time!!!
A few years ago, i was fortunate to aquire a scale model of a Chevy Luv stepside from a fellow LuvTruck member named QCRAZY. Still in the box and wrapped in plastic. Well, guess what? That's right... Dad found the model and decided to build it. I didn't even know about it until i seen it assembled sitting on a shelf in his den.
It took all of my willpower to keep from smashing the little truck into a billion pieces.
And he's got the stones to think it's not a big deal.

You really need to get out on your own with your own place, big garage, and tools.

I know you probably can't right now, money or whatever, being the reason, but the short and simple answer is

GET OUT!! :!: :!:

I'm sorry I don't have any other help to offer. I feel for you. I see it the agravation in my 22 and 19 y.o.'s still living in my house. I want them out as much as they want to be out, but it's just not the right time yet.

To do that, i would have to take a direct position with an aircraft company. So far in my years of working, i have yet to find a place that i would like to make my home. Texas is my home of record and Cove is basicly a place to store things that wouldn't be practical to haul around the country. Hauling a cargo trailer full of stuff is bad enough and making a special trip for the LUV is mandatory to keep it from Dads duct tape ideas. Not to mention the El Camino i bought in Savannah. I seriously doubt that i'll settle down in Ga. And i know for a fact that the El Camino will not be parked in Cove for any length of time. He will not get involved with it in any way, shape, or form. Hell, I've had it for over a year now and i still haven't mentioned it to him.

I'll ride it out until Friday, that's when i head back east.
