I am a new Chevy Luv owner. Eventually I'll convert it to run on waste vegetable oil like my car. I'm trying to fix it up a bit first. Water keeps filling up the floor of the cab when it rains. I have looked everywhere and can't find the leak. Are their some common leaky spots that I might not have seen?

Oh yeah...the leak seems to be worse on the passenger side but there is also water on the floor of the drivers side. Any ideas?

Get someone with some food coloring died water(red?) in a bottle. Poor it slowely over the front window trim. Over the cowel. top of the windsheld. Cab drains on the roof. Someone needs to be inside to find it with a good light too see it. Start in the lower areas and work up. I guess you could put some kind of smell in it too. I coud help..

Like a leakly hearter core with antifreeze, The smell and wet will tell you whats wrong with.

I just resurrected the thread, but I did a writeup of fixing leaky wiper shafts quite a while back that may help. Seems to be a common source of leaks.

My 79 still fills up with water though, I need to get agressive with the sealant around the windshield gasket. I've found some stuff recently that it is designed for windshield gasket leaks, basically silicone sealant that is cut real thin to run into all the little places water uses to get in the truck. It worked great for fixing leaks on my 77, just have not gotten around to using it on the 79.

If the passenger side floorboard gets soaked more than the drivers side, inspect the antenna. Water gets underneath and flows down the cable into the cab. I had this problem and found it when i noticed the kick panel was wet.
Use some rtv on the antenna base and feed some cable back thru the kick panel.

I had a similar antenna cable issue. Every winter the passenger side would getwet. There was so much dirt packed between the inner and outer fenders that the water just ran right in the hole for the antenna cable.

I cleaned out the dirt and filled the hole with silicone. No more problems.

I think the cowl is the problem with alot of these trucks water goes in with dirt plugs the drains and it eventaully rides down the cab on the kick panel areas check to see if you have rust at the kick panel area

The kick panels are the area where your feet go, and since most of the non drained water or the antenna leakage leads right there, so lift your carpet up and check that area for rust. But ya, thats what the kick panels are

rtv is a silicon sealer. Any sort will do even the plumbers stuff. Just make sure the surfaces are clean and have no oil on them.

Kick panel is the trim beside your outside foot. Its usually made from compressed board in older cars. Masonite (dark brown tile underlay stuff) or similar.

The cable is the one for the antenna or aerial for the radio/wireless. Trace it from the antenna or from the radio.


I think the feed some back bit is to make sure youve got some slack. Wires should never be pulled tight as this will encourage them to rub thru. Also if youve got a bit of slack you can move the wire around to get it out of the way or route it differently. If you stick it in with silicon it will be fixed and you cant slide it in and out of the passenger compartment.

It should have a propper sized rubber grommet around it.


If you look under the front mudguard at the back of the wheel you will see where the mud/dirt builds up. Its a good idea with any car to give this a good clean out as often as you can. Dirt holds moisture and moisture premotes rust.

I had trouble once and found out the drains for the grate behind the hood (cant think of name of it) right under winshield where wiper shaft comes out. was cloged so i went under neath and pushed a wire up through it and junk com out and no more leak.

it sounds like you may have some rust behind the windshield gasket mine had a small hole at the base of the windshield channel when i was painting it i had the glass out and fixed the hole it was very small but that was all it took to leak inside the truck.
