My theory is ... since they were fixed up and cool looking, they got sold around and used up more, and faster.
A customized truck is what younger kids ( with a lot less $ and sometimes less care and experience) want. So the custom trucks probably got the hell torn out of them and trashed and even wreaked faster than the stocker that the old man bought new, maintained, and drove to and from work every day.
Here in L.A. I see various mini and mid sized trucks towing others , in groups of 3 or 4 sets, heading towards Mexico all the time.
I figure the nice old ones went down there years ago also.
