what's the pipe that runs from exhaust manifold to the intake manifold behind the motor. and also do i need it?

That would be your egr tube, and yes, you do need it

Just to pass smog, or emissions testing mind you....

so i don't need it if i don't need emissions cause i don't see them on luv's with headers.

i have mine off but you will have to plug the hole under the carb where you take it off at or take the vacuum thing off and make a metal plate like i did .. it also gives you a lot more room under the intake to do work
but if you have to have the truck smogged keep it on if not take it off put the header and weber on

Us Washingtonians don't have to put vehicles over 25 years old through emissions testing. That saves us the fee. If you have a problem with your EGR system, get rid of it and move to Washington. When yer all finished movin' come over and say hi!!!

Is that WA as in Washington or WA as in Western Australia???

Going by the Gemini (I mark) only the Manual trans ones had the EGR.

Check that out, could apply to the Luv as well. I doubt it would be different anywhere else other than possibly California.



Or you could just remove the whole EGR setup and put a plate over it.

The other thing you can do is cut the tube on the inlet side of the motor and flatten an inch or so and the fold it over and flatten it onto itself. Doing that is usualy enough to seal it off. Or remove the tube and put a bung in the hole.
Its all a bit hard to do on the motor under the inlet. Probably not so bad over in the good old USA as you dont have the steering shaft and gear selectors in the way like we do.

Most exhaust places can get the bung thats needed to weld to the extractors/headers so the EGR works propperly and they can get the ones for O2 sensors as well for EFi cars.

I got another exhaust manifold that I'm going to be putting in soon, and it came from the wrecking yard with the tube as Rodeobob described. Those things are a bitch to remove, as are the old studs. I had to drill the old studs out and run a tap through it. I put two new 10mm exhaust studs in. I'm going to be installing it sometime within the next two weeks, whenever I get around to it.

I just got through removing mine. the passage through the intake manifold was so packed with carbon I actually had to drill it out. I removed the EGR completely. Frees up a lot of room under the intake. I tapped out the hole in the manifold and installed a bolt to plug it. I had the head and manifold off so it was easy to do on the bench.

on the exhaust manifold I could not break the fitting free. so I welded a bolt in the hole to plug that end.[/img]

I was scraping at mine with a chisel to get the carbon out. The intake side was sandblasted, so it came out like brand new. I still don't have all the EGR hoses connected and I have to write another post for that.

I still need a new (used) electric choke.

Maybe some time us LUVvers can get together since we're not too far apart. I would like to see your truck, and you'd enjoy checking out mine.

Hey, I want in too. Although my truck won't be stock or even drivable for a while I wouldn't mind helping you out sometime if you have a two person job. I'm just over the hill in Auburn and I have a neighbor I don't like either. Heck that pretty much makes us brothers. lol.

WA is what Aust post calls it. Wonder if out post mob is staffed by aliens the same as yours.



That 2 into 1 tube can be made up to any length. Altering the length may be of some benifit to you down the track.

I put up a more permanent suspension for the tarp. I used a 4x4 and a pier block, like I said I was going to. It didn't come together as well as I had thought; I was a little careless in the planning. I stuck it all together anyway, and found I need another 2x4, but it'll have to wait until I go rolling again.

I need to get into the engine and see if I left the timing chain tensioner locked, rather than set. Those two terms are confusing, huh? (Page #43, Fig. 1-34; Haynes#319) At the same time I plan to tighten up the two bolts in the photo. I hope that's all it takes to stop the oil leak from the top of the timing cover. Otherwise it looks like I have to do nearly everything all over again-drop the pan, remove the head, take out the distributor, buy new gaskets, replace the oil and antifreeze. I'm stalling at the moment. I'm going to eat a 17-pound turkey today, watch football, and relax. Happy Thanksgiving to everybody.
