alrighty i just got done trouble shooting an intermitant starting issue. it was acting like the starter wasnt always getting voltage. so i got a buddy to help out and we tested the starter, it wold get inconsistant amperage(it would bounce between 3 and 1.5) to the starter wire but was getting a consistant 11.5volts. so we whent up stream and ended up ohming the the ignition switch. it would bounce between about .2ohms and then jump up to almost 3ohms. So im thinking bad switch, am i correct with this?

Or a poor corroded ground or connection, poor connections in your fuse box, too small guage of wire patched in somewhere...I have seen a lot of wild stuff happen because of bad wiring, a corroded fuse box, and crappy connections and grounds.

Happy hunting!

Clearly the wiring harness on a Luv was not their best work....lol

Is that two tenths of an ohm up to 3 0hms? If so, yeah bad contacts in it.

The contacts inside the switch probably have a little carbon on them from a little arcing over the years. A point file could probably fix it if you can get inside.

ok so heres a twist...
I go to leave wrk today, truck starts but the starter motor is still running, bt the pinion is ot engaged. This tells me that the soloniod is not energized. So anyway i shut the truck down and the motor is just going to town, but the pinion is still not engaged. So i pull ot the 6 cell mag light pull a batter terminal ad beat the tar outta the starter. Reconnect te batery and im off whith out a hitch. What the hell is up with this starter. Im thinking of just swapping it out to see if everything is starter related... :?

Seen a lot of that over the years, mper. The starter gear not engaging was usually cuz the shaft was dirty and needed cleaning plus some lubrication. If the engine starts, but the starter stays engaged, you can have bad flywheel teeth or real dirty shaft. Now explain exactly what the starter did. I didn't quite understand what was happening. I fixed many a starter for different reasons back in the day when I was in your shoes.

I'm thinking solenoid on the starter, perhaps combined with a sticky bendix. My first impulse would be to swap the whole works and add the old one to the pile I have that are tagged as bad.

After re-reading your post this morning, mepr, I deduced that maybe you were telling us that the starter motor was still running when it shouldn't. If so, that's usually becuz the big copper washer inside the solenoid that connects the main contacts has been arc welded by current flow to one of the contacts and can't disconnect.

it has nothing to do with the soloniod from what i can tell. The starter motor was still running, but NOT engaging the flywheel. It was just freewheeling so to speak. But anyway it has not done it again yet, and if it does the Ford Wrench should fix it again
