Good old Murphy's Law is kicking my buddy's butt today.

He bought my old stock '80 longbed Luv from me a while back and his ex told him she wanted him to come down from Olympia Washinton to some little town about 100 miles east from Palm Springs California to get his 8 year old son to come to live with him from now on.

So we started getting his truck ready for a long trip by doing the front wheel bearings, did the brakes, gave it a tune-up, replaced all of the leaky gaskets, etc.

Just 3 days before he left I noticed his timing chain cover was leaking oil pretty bad. Against my advice...he just tightened it more, changed the oil and took off.

He got as far as Lodi when the cover started puking oil pretty bad. He decided to just keep dumping oil in it and continued on to his ex's.

When he got there...he went and bought some cheap tools and started to try to pull the cover. After about 2 days work and a ton of cell phone calls to me for technical advice (he's not very mechanically inclined) he got everything undone but the 4 front studs that go through the bottom of the cover into the front of the oil pan and just gave up.

(I'm assuming staying at the ex's with her, the ex-mother-in-law, the new boyfriend, their 2 kids, plus his own 8 year old may have had something to do with this...lol)

So when he decided to just put it all back together and try to limp it back home...he accidently dropped a bolt down into the cover when he was putting the 2 bolts that go throught the front of the head into the top of the cover.

Obviously he couldn't retrieve it, realizes now he is screwed, and has decided to jack up the engine, change the oil pan gasket and replace the timing chain cover gaskets...and he is practically in tears.

I'm about ready to smash my cell phone from it ringing all day for two days..and I just can't wait for tomorrow's next batch of calls.

Someone please just kill me now....pretty please.

Tell him to put a strong magnet on the oil pan. the bolt will go there and stay. Not a permanent fix, but if I were in his shoes I would do it.

Or ditch the LUV and fly home. :D

Wow!

It's really nice for you guys to jump right in and so quickly offer to hasten my early demise....now I really feel special.

I just wish one of you lived near where he is so you could go help the poor guy get his truck back on the road so I could get something done around here...because all of the cell calls all day while I'm trying to get some work done are making me want to just go lay down and take a nap in the fast lane of the freeway during rush hour.

Worrying about who would get my Luv and whether it would be treated well is about the only thing holding me back.

Well.....that and knowing how much you all would miss me.

To deserve all of this....I must have been real bad in a former life....lol

If the bolt made it to the pan the strong magnet trick will work (big speaker magnet best) BUT if it is in the chain and gears then he has to take it apart any way, and from the sounds of it he is close to breaking the chain anyway so again it needs to come apart. See what happens when you sell your trucks to your buddy's? THEY COME BACK TO HAUNT YOU

My answer to that can't be posted...due to this being a family-oriented site...lol

Well it's almost lunch time and so far...no calls.

(Taz immediately crosses his fingers for luck.)
