How many quarts of oil does a 80 luv 4x4 hold? I thought it was 5.3 quarts but I am verry unsure. my dipstick reads way over the line and i dont want to blow anything so, do I have too much oil in it? Thanks yall!

I think I usually end up with 4 quarts and a little more for a full oil change with filter. There is some oil that stays up in the head, and probably other areas of the engine to make up the extra quart quoted in the specs.

When I do an oil change, I dump in 4 quarts, give it a few minutes to settle, then check the stick to see how much more to add. Don't believe the quoted specs. A good ding in the oil pan will lower the capacity, and a fair number of vehicles around have some dings in their pan ;)

As for having too much, well that is a debate I guess. If your truck drinks a lot of oil like my old 79 did, it might not take it long to get back down to normal. I would try to figure some way to get some out of it if it is way over the line. Get a siphon pump with a small enough pickup tube to get down the dipstick tube and pull some out. The hash marked section of the dipstick is about a quart wide (one quart will go from the bottom of the stick to the top of the hash marks) so that gives you some idea of how much too much you have in there.

Great. I just noticed that I have a little black liquid stuff coming out of my tail pipe, so that is why I thought I had too much oil. my luck its the head gasket.

when i change my oil i usually put in 4.5q run it for a few minuets then have to add another .5q. That black fluid coming out your tail pipe is probly just water. My truck gets that every now and then if it sits for more than a day or so. Water will condense in your muffler and exsaust pipe and will mix with carbon from the exsaust and then get blown out. Perty common for high humidity areas like ours!

I usually start with mine 1/2 quart high. That way, as it uses it, it never gets too low. Doing it this way, I use 5 quarts for an oil change. (Funny how I never seem to drain 5 quarts out though.)

If you put way too much oil in, it will make the engine smoke. Assuming it doesn't go crunch, you can take some out and the smoke will clear.

I forgot to mention, you should also recheck after you've run it when you do an oil/filter change. If you put on the filter empty it will suck some of it up. I have gotten into the habit now of filling up the filter before I put it on.

Are you checkin' it while it's running? I would think somewhere over 4.5 qts should do for a 1.8, I kno a 2.2 in s-10's and cavaliers take 4 qts, but ecotec 2.2s take 4.75, IDK, never actually drivin a gas luv... am I missing out? lol

I do have a 4x4 and i just did another oil change and only put in 4 quarts and its rite on the line. My motor still runs like crap and has no power in 3rd and 4th gear, but hey... it runs! I just moved a couch and it went fine! just a little slow! I guess I should not go by the book? the book say'd 5.3 quarts.

What type of oil did you put in it?

I always use Castrol 20/50 in my stocker 2wd's and they run like a scalded dog.

Me? I used castarol 10w-30. I used the same before exept I put in a quart of hyperlube. I have been driving all over Everett and it seems to be going ok. Im driving it to go move some stuff today. I think if I got a better carb and installed my MSD ignition then I would have ALOT more power. What is the plug gap supposed to be at? and what is the plug gap supposed to be with a MSD?
