Alrighty i have the opertunity to buy an 82 LUV 4x4 whith a C223 in it. Now the guy whants $1500 for it. From the pics i have seen it might be worth it, its white and i couldnt see any rust. The only thing im realy concerned about is the fact that it has been started whith eather. Im a total deasel noob so how hard is this on engines? And also what are some problem things i should be aware of? Thanks.

Since it has been started with ether that is a hint that the glow plug system must not be fully operational. Does his truck have a block heater? Using ether on a diesel is not really the best thing to do, it can be hard on the pistons and make the engine knock during start up. But if the owner sprays in a little and not a lot of ether the engine probably should be fine. See if you can get the truck for a little less or I mean negotiate with him further. Looks like a pretty nice truck otherwise and I hope you do buy it if you do consider. Good luck.

yeah he told me that the glow plugs are finikey. Hes working on converting it over to 11volt VW glow plugs. Its coming from a shop so he told me by the tim i buy it that will be fixed, and yes it does have a block heater.

Well that's good that he'll have it straight when you buy it. Plus, since the truck has a block heater tend to use that when the temperatures get cold and plug the truck in over night. You will find that it's much easier on the truck when plugged in and you'll never need to use a can of ether again. Factor in the newly working glow plug system and you should be good to go. When you buy it make sure you post here on your issues and questions. Glad to see you're buying a diesel because I recall you were looking for one not too long ago.

yeah he sadi if he cant get the VW plug system to work hell rig up a togle switch so there wont be a timer or realays. Thats how the equipment at work i use is so i have a perty good feel for that. Yeah i have been looking for a deisel for a while, i heard they are suposed to get around 30mpg. If thats true then thats about half again as much as my gas LUV.

they'll get more than 30mpg, mine used to get 37mpg, my dad's gets 38mpg, now my truck gets 41mpg; however, yours being 4x4 and all will have 4.10 gears, you'll be doing pretty good o get 30-35mpg out of it.

Yes ether is hard on a motor, never had to use it on my truck though, I used an electric hair drier, you heard right. I just stuck it in the flexible rubber tube on the intake and let it heat up a little (I did take off the wing nut and washer to releive pressure, so that alot wouldn't go into the valve cover n' stuff)

I say get it! Even if it did have a glow-plug problem, it's still an easy fix, it's about as hard as changing spark plugs, just that you have to take the metal band off all of them.

Good luck with the buy, since you have been tinkerin' with your gasser, maybe he could put bigger exhaust and stuff on it too, you'd be up here (it's not far up though ) with LUVdiesel and me!

i believe you on the hair dryer trick, thats esentially how Cummins diesles are. They heat the air coming in instead of the air in the motor. As far as the gearing goes, If i get this guy it will get the 215/75 15s that are on my 80 right now when i get the 28" swampers mounted for the 80. So that should help it out some right?

Sure does, the "larry" guy we know runs that tire and rim size on his 87' pup TD and the rest of his 4x4 pups, he says his mileage is a bit better and doesn't notice the larger tires.

If he wires the glowplugs direct to a switch, be aware that original Isuzu glowplugs are rated for 5 volts, not 12.
I have mine hooked direct to a momentary switch, and don't glow them for more than 3 seconds. After burning out 3 sets, I've concluded 3 seconds will work.
As far as ether goes, used in moderation it's reasonably safe. If you spray in enough to lock the engine, it's WAY too much.
My old engine is getting tired, and so I've fitted an ether injector off of a farm tractor to help below freezing when I can't plug it in. Measured amount per application. So far, it's worked well. It's too tired to start off of glow alone. Starts instantly when anything but cold, without any assistance from glow or anything.

well i looked at the little guy today. Runs like a top and drives realy nice. Only problem whith it is the glow plugs wich will just have a switch now and the floor is rusted through. So im perty much saying, say hello to a new diesel owner

Congratulations on the buy of a great truck. You will only learn to really like all the things that the diesel engine has to offer. It's a very reliable engine and you'll be getting great fuel mileage. Basically it's a trade off for buying the truck. Good luck and here is to many many more miles to come.
