today i was given some steel wheels that are 15x10 with like 3 inches of back spacing. i looked them over and noticed that there was 5 welds on the back holding the center in place. well i was bored so i ground the weld off as much as i could and the took'em down to my buddy's house and threw them on the lathe, to finish removing the weld. After that was done i took it off the lathe and placed it on the ground and jumped on it, moving the center just a hair (i am 200 pounds) so i broke out the big hammer and wacked down slowly and then placed a level on the face of the rim and measured and agisted the depth until it was even all the way a round then welded them back up! i now have 5.5 inches of backspacing. anyone else done this before?

I had a shop do the same thing to a set of rims for my truck. They did a crappy job and the wheel always had a wobble, but they never broke or anything.

yeah, id think that hwen you do it yourself youd probablty get a wobbly wheel. i wouldnt trust myself to do something like that. but if it works, it works! i just hope the arent too wobbly for ya.

i had a shop do that to a set of 15x8 wheels so i could better fit 9" slicks under my 66 Nova. they did a good job and the wheels only cost me $40 each.... bout 10 years ago. they are chrome steel modular wheels. still have them in my garage and was going to make a grinder or vice pedestal out of them.

back in the dark old days, rims were rivited together. we used to to cut the head off the rivit with a torch and punch the rivits out with a hammer and punch. put the centers in wider rims, put them on the front, spin it
tap it with a hammer until it ran true, weld it up. dragged and circle tracked them for yrs. no problems
