I've got a chance to get a shortbed '82 Toy 4X4 riding on 35" tires. Lots of suspension lift & I believe a 3" body lift. Now then, its not running, the body is rusted all to Hell (but the frame's solid), the tires are junk, & its been sitting since about '96 according to the plates. Like I said, the frame looks good as does the suspension.

My father in law has an old '83 2wd longbed w/ the same motor (22R) & a solid cab.

The 4X4 has a 4spd manual & the 2wd has a 5spd manual. Can the 5spd be made to work on the 4X4? Maybe a tailhousing swap or something?

Are the 2wd cabs the same as the 4wd cabs? Otherwise, can I just do a cab swap?

Any help or advice is appreciated. :D

I beleive that Toyota T-cases are set up like Isuzu ones. In wich case the T-case piggy backs on the rest of the tranny. So that means that the 4x4 and the 2wd trannies have diferent output shafts and tail housings. That said i doubt that the cases on the 4speed and 5 speed are similar so i doubt you could swap the t-case.

the cab for the 4x4 and the 2wd are the same im pretty sure. i think the only difference is that the 4x4 might have another hole in the floor for the transfercase shifter. the older toyota 4x4s have flared from fenders, so youll wanna swap those over too.

Thanx for the input so far. Here's a crappy pic of the little beast-

We stuck a battery in it earlier & it cranked over w/o any nasty clunking sounds or anything. Thats always a good sign.....

I think I may go ahead & make the deal for it. Anyone is South Texas got a shortbed LUV body for cheap?? :D

The cabs are the same, the difference would be the fenders (4x4's have larger, flares out openings) and the T-case hole. It'll cost you more than the truck is worth to convert the 4x2 tranny to 4x4. If you start looking for a 4x4 5-speed try to get one from a "Turbo" 4x4 (85-87 I think) it's stronger, and has a lower 1st gear.

You've got a good thing there! Good luck!

Go to Pirate4x4.com and you can find a 5 speed 4x4 trans for dirt cheap as well as any other Toyota parts you may need.
