Im starting to build my ford 9 inch for my luv cause the stock one is takin a crap on me, and I was just wondering what you V8 guys were running in your trucks.I'm planning on a 3.25 gear ratio but Im afraid it will be too tall and it will be a slug at low speeds. :( My gear ratios in my transmission are 2.54-1.92-1.51-1.00.Oh, and does the drive shaft have to be shortened or lengthened?I really dont want to have to go back to the drive shaft shop after paying $500 to get it made. The sad thing was, at first it was only supposed to be about $275.Plus the trans yoke alone was $125  For those outragous prices I should just open up my own drive shaft shop.

my rear end ratios are 5.13's :D but for your streeter some 3.73's would probobly work very well for you.

All I could tell you about my rear, which is an 8in. is that you turn the wheel 3 times to 1 rev of the drive line.

I'd have to agree with the 3.73's as well. I've got 4.56's in mine and I hate them for street driving. The freeway is out of the question.

Being that you have a 400 you won't feel the difference as much as us 350 guys.

3.73 good for driving. decent mileage and you can keep the rpm's down on the h-way.

What size rear tires? Also the stock rear end uses a different size U joint. I had a shaft made from scratch for a 350 trans and a 9 inch rear end, new u joints and everything for 210.00. This included the good tubeing for big HP.

Dunno about speed, as I didn't have a speedo hooked up, and the truck is down to the frame at the moment... but you wouldbe moving right along at 3 grand. but not sure what the speed was...

I'm running about 25x7'' wide street tires out back, but I might be tubbing it too cause it wants to fish tail on me when I get on it.I used a ratio calculator and these are the numbers I got at 3000 rpm in high gear (1:1.) 3.08=75mph--3.36=69mph--3.55=65mph--3.73=62mph.I kinda like the 3.36 ratio but I'm not sure. :?

Well I got some problems with my motor now.I drove it recently and it ran really good and when I was coming home it would only run ok under 1600 RPM.I thought it was my rockers but it turns out it has a rod knock. It gets really bad when you put it under a load. Do you guys think I should try some STP oil treatment?
THIS REALLY SUCKS .

My opinion is that oil additives mask a problem. You need to get to the root of the problem and repair it. It won't fix it's self and if it is a rod get in and repair it before it takes out your crank or even better windows the block.

You should be okay if you go through everything and check the clearances
unlike me I just assumed the bearings are good but I was very wrong. The T-10 trans it has,had no gaskets, worn sliders, and crushed synchros. It's an expirimental vehicle so I cant get to mad at it.But once everything is working order you will have tons of fun with it, and they draw plenty attention.Especially the cops.

Back to gearing... I'm running a Ford 9" unit with 2.75 gears with 25" tall rear tires. No speedometer but ratio calculations call out 2500 r.p.m.@ 75 m.p.h. It will pour smoke from a dead stop for at least 100 ft. Tall gearing does that. This setup makes for a little better gas mileage and more consistant engine temps. It accelerates pretty strong but it wont make your butthole pucker up. It's great on the Hwy though. Passing vehicles is childs play.
