 Post subject: Fuel pump relay?
PostPosted: Fri Oct 28, 2005 3:13 pm
I have a 76 luv and the gas is not flowing. I have checked all of the fuel lines, the fuse, the pump, and followed the wiring through the whole truck. the only thing left seems to be the relay. The only problem is that i can't find one. Not a single parts store in all of Phoenix can find anything like it. CAN ANYBODY HELP ME? It is a five prong relay and the numbers on the side are MR3-451 582553-0181. If anybody has one to sell, let me know. Or if you can offer any advice like where I can find one, or maybe a cross reference number, what years of luvs used that part, or even another car that had the same one. Help!

hey there from Mesa, Az. my suggestion would be to use a bosch style relay and either get a connector that attaches into the new relay I think Checker has them as a "Hella" brand. Bosch relays usually have a wiring diagram on them too! see below... or if you want to stick with the old style relay you might want to go to ecology auto parts down on 27th ave south of I-10 look for the water tower on the west side. its $1.00 to get in and they usually have 4 or 5 luv's in varius stages of disassembly. bring tools!

30 main power in
87a normally closed ( i think)
87 normally open ( i think)
the other 2 are power and ground for the coil in the relay 85,86

my truck was already modefied when i got it. they ran an ignition wire to a ford fuel shutoff switch (disconnects power if you car is hit) then direct to the fuel pump. I havent gotten arround to changing it back to stock and replacing the relay the people i bought it from could not find.

Go to this post and see wiring for autozone relay. I put one on my truck and it works fine.

Do a search for relay and many posts will come up.
You have to cut off plug and replace it with stake on connectors.

if you dont want the jumbled mess with 5 female spade connectors you can use a relay pigtail. pick them up at your parts store. The Hella part number is 87173. its a water tight sealed connector so say goodbye to corrosion! If you're having problems finding them there I know Imperial parts supply has them, thats where we get ours from for work.

where is this relay located on the truck. i'm not getting any power to my pump. i did a stock motor swap last week and all i did was unplug and plug back. i went from an 80 to a 79. i could here the pump before i took the motor out. now nothing. i hooked straight to the batt. and shot gas across the garage. it works, just now not getting power to it.
