Got me one of those this summer. Was getting into stuff around the house, caught it the first night the trap was out. They really don't like being caged up, the one I got bent the handle off my trap and pulled it in with him. I had to hook some wire through the cage so I could carry it, no way I was going to stick my fingers in there. ;)

Just in case you don't know it, 'cute' little racoons are some VICIOUS CRITTERS! Once they reach 1 year old pet coons get real violent and almost always attack their owners.

Some friends went camping in the Sierras and took their dogs, 2 good big full-sized hounds and a Labrador cross. The dogs treed a small coon and it then fell out of the tree and they killed it. That night as the campfire burned down a 3 foot [!!!] tall coon came out of the underbrush and they said it walked on its hind legs like a bear. The dogs went for it and a couple of minutes later both hounds were dead and the Lab was torn to shreds. I saw the Lab the next day and I've never seen an animal so torn up in my life. They were finally able to club the coon to death and the Lab barely survived, and with one ear and one eye from then on! Not something to mess with.....

If you're not going to kill it, take it at least forty to fifty miles away. Once they find food, they keep coming back. They can get into just about anything except a bear trash can. They are definetly Tasmanian Devil and Wooley Booger material.

I've seen them at work before. very smart animals. They know how to open zippers and some other lever operated containers like ice chests.

What I'd like to ask you, Luvnit, what are you doing with the 'unwanted' (ferral) felines around your house after you trap 'em???

I am glad we dont have very many coons around here. I heard they will also try to drown dogs in water too. Is that true?? If I ever catch a coon hurting my dog I am going to put some lead in it. :snipe:

my dad shot a 29 lb female coon when I was a kid. We were raising mallard ducks, had 50 of them in a elevated pen, 1/2 mdf for the tops and bottoms and chicken wire on all four sides. Damn coon came and pulled the ducks through the chicken wire, that alone would have killed the ducks. She made the mistake of coming back for another meal the next night and dad put two rifled 12ga slugs into her. She still managed to make a run for the timberline. We found her 10 feet inside the timerline the next morning.

As for cats, we too had these on the farm, some idiot came by and dropped off a few strays one night and they multiplied from there. Dad would find a litter of new kittens and round them up in a burlap sack and toss them into the lake. Mom didn't like that much so we resorted to shooting them with the pee-shooter (.22). Damn things were wild and would attack you when you went into the barn, so they couldn't be rehabbed, i dont believe.
