My son's 1978 Luv picked up a "hick-up" or sputter under load on the highway (mainly accelerating in 3rd and 4th gear) so we decided to change the plugs, wires, etc..

We got the first 3 plugs out no problem but went to pull the fourth and it was really tight, apparently cross threaded by the previous owner. The new plug woludn't go in so rather than force it we are looking for a long-term fix. Can we run a tap down the hole and re-thread? Anyone know what size that would be? Other suggestions?

I did some checking on the plug threads and it appears it is a 14 mm x 1.25? Does that sound right to anyone?

Tap it to a larger size and use a helio coil.

They should still have thread repair kits for 14mm, very common size.. Just remember to use grease on the tap to help minimize the shavings into the motor.

I had to repair three on my truck one, the thread is in here somewhere if you want to look. I ended taking the head off because I was worried about getting filings in the engine, but it was a but load of work. Especially if you drop a timing cover bolt down the front. . .

Used a heli coil, and it worked like a charm, still fixed to this day.
