 Post subject: 8 MPG!!??
PostPosted: Fri Nov 04, 2005 6:57 pm
Hi all! I'm an owner of 78 Chevy Luv P/U (auto trans), with [1]32,000 miles (I'm assuming it's 132,000...I mean who only puts 32,000 miles on a 78?) Anyway, I wondered if anyone else gets the truly lousy gas mileage I do of only 8 mpg :( Is that normal :?: I was just given an 87 Mazda 323 wagon (I know...it ain't a Chevy Luv!), and am going to need to sell my orange baby (like yours LUVINIT)....if it only got better mileage I would probably have decided to hang onto it...even though I've had to crawl in from the passenger side for three years now. Unfortunately, I can't afford to keep both vehicles (unemployed like so many these days )

Any words about this horrific mpg I've been getting since I acquired over four years ago? Thanks.

Also, anyone interested in purchasing, PM me!!!

You better check under the hood and count the cylinders on that engine, because it sounds like you got 8 of em! :)

Just kidding, thats some pretty horiffic gas mileage. I get 8 miles to the gallon with a SBC in my LUV, so for a four banger thats pretty bad. Try changing the fuel line filter, spark plugs, plug wires, etc. The easy stuff. Then if that don't work, maybe look into a carb kit or tuning the carb at least. (don't ask me how to do that though, somebody else will know :) )

Thanks, Smokin! Sure does sound like 8 cylinders, doesn't it? But I guarantee there's only 4.  and 1.8 ltr

I've tuned it up regularly...and many times changed the fuel line filter(s). Got two now. ha! Think someone used to feed her crummy cheap gas (before me)...and tank may be full of sludge. I'm starting to think now  IF I only could find a place to store her <sigh>, remove the tank, clean it out...and replace the fuel pump, it may do considerably better.

I also believe the owner before me had either replaced or rebuilt the engine...but with what I haven't a clue. Still 4 cylinders, tho. :D In any case, I believe I'll leave it up to whomever is fortunate to own her after me...as long as I never have to see them barrelling down the freeway! :(

BTW, what should the average MPG be for a 78 auto Luv??

Thanks, Luvnt! Wish I'd found this site before I switched over to the Mazda wagon. :( If I don't find someone special to give her a good home (looks just like your avatar!), I will try very hard to find somewhere to keep her so my mechanic and I can work on her. No room where I live (RV Park).

i would say the carb has tken a dump. Look around the base plate of the carb if its wet you have bad gasket, also look for that and the intake manifold. buddy of mine was getting 10mpg out of his 79 becouse the gaskets at the base of the carb were bad. A few dollars later and he was getting 22mpg like my 80.

something definitely wrong. I've got a 76 with auto and get in the 20-22 mpg range.

Sounds like a carburetor to me. I've seen discussions on here about the Weber carbs that will fit, or can be made to fit without a lot of trouble and expense. I like the idea of checking the gaskets. I've never heard of that before, but it makes a lot of sense. Also check to see if the vibration has not caused any of the other carb screws to back out. Don't know if kits are still available, but that would probably do the trick.
