Alrighty i just pulled my rear axle appart to repack my wheel bearings. When i pulled the shafts out there was 90W in the bearing compartment. I dont think this is right as there is an inner wheel seal. But when i look in there the seal is installed so that the open side of it is facing twards the diferential. So my question is, should the open side of the seal be facing twards the bearings? It is my understanding that thats how they work. Thanks for the help and no these are not original seals or bearings.

From my recollection, the open side of the seal faces the thing you are trying to hold in, so I'd think that means the diff side with 90w being more likely to run than grease.

The parts book is no help in this area, just shows the seal as a ring with no good picture of the side of it.

yeah thats what i was thinking as well. And the exploded view in the factory shop manual was no help, just shows the seal as ring like you said. The bearings still look brand new after about 60,000miles so i dont think the 90w was hurting anything.

if you've got the time it might be worth pulling th other side and vetifying its the same way. I've never had a luv rear axle apart but i plan to soon. mine is leaking from the wheel seal, and pinion seal. I was always under the impression that drive axle bearings were oil bath as long as the axle tube attaches to the brake assembly. (not like a vette)

Well the conclusion i have come to is its a 2 lube bearing. They are packed so when your sidehilling or something where the diff oil cant get to the bearings they dont run dry. My 64 Ford is like this. Im just thinking the seals are there to regulate the amount of gear lube in the bearing compartment so it dosnt wash out the grease. And yes both sideds had the seals installed the same direction.
