Are the 2x and 4x drive shafts different lengths? In other words is a 4x trans longer because of the transfer case and stuff?

If so, does anyone know the length of a 4x4 drive shaft, 1979/80?

To be honest I've never put a tape measure to either, but the 2wd and 4wd rear drive shafts are the same length. The transfer case hangs off the side of the 4x4 trans, so the tailshaft section of the trans/tcase comes out to the same spot as a 2wd trans. You get a different shaft in an automatic LUV, and a long bed has a two piece shaft, but those are the only differences.

im perty shure the manual tranies are the same length. Thing i would worry about is output spline count. I know my 4x4 has a high count then my 78 2wd.

O.K. thanks. The reason I ask is I have a eng., 4x trans. , and drive shaft that a guy had in a 2x truck. He cut off the transfer case shifter and ran it like that.

I was thinking about putting it in my 2x but with the shifter so I would have super low granny gears with 2wd when needed.

I use my low range for a granny low all the time.

BTW, what's up with the splines? I never knew there was a difference until I tried to put a different driveshaft on my truck and the front yoke didn't fit.

I know my 75 shortbed 2wd has a coarse spline and the my 79 shortbed 4wd has a fine spline.
