It does seem like there is a lot of stuff going down this year. Compared to the worst of the last couple million years though, this is nothing. You mentioned Yellowstone, it is one of the largest known volcanoes in the world. Check this out:
http://www.yellowstonenationalpark.com/calderas.htm This bit kind of sums it up: "2400 times as much as Mt St. Helens". St Helens is about 80 miles from me. The blast was loud, and It left us with an inch of ash.
There is also another caldera volcano about 1/2 the size of Yellowstone on the Cali/Nevada border at Long Valley, and another somewhat smaller one near Los Alamos. Lucky for us these things only blow once every million years or so.
I look at it like this, we could all be squashed like bugs at pretty much any time, so we might as well enjoy the show. I hate to see people suffering, but I'd rather let it inspire me to greater things that sit around depressed.
