I noticed that there are shim plates for sale for the front disks on my 78,my truck didn't have these when I got it and I haven't put any on.Is this whats allowing my brake pads to move up and down and make all that noise? Or are the little wear alert springs that I snapped off the culprit

The shims don't really seem to make all that much difference in chattering. I've run without them on most of the trucks I've had just because you rarely find a truck that still has them on it. They basically just go between the pads and caliper to provide a smoother surface, they don't hold anything in place. The wear springs do act to keep the pads from bouncing around though. So if you've got a couple of them busted off then that is probably where any chattering or noise trouble is coming from. I've run without one or two of those too though, and not had real terrible problems with noise from the front. I usually lube the contact points between the caliper and pads with silicone grease. (just a little dab will do) Get the piston on one side, and the two fingers on the other. Just don't get anything on the abrasive side of the pads themselves or on the rotor.

The other place you can get some noise from is the shims that hold the calipers in place. If they get too worn down the caliper can move around and cause problems, and if they get rusted/crudded up the brakes can stick on and drag.
