I heard, that if you draing a auotmatic transimisson youserlf you dont get all the old fluid out. So its good to have a shop flush it out.

My questions is at how many miles do I need to change the the trannny fluid (along with the filter). I have a 96 Ford Countour.
I dont have a manuel for it, and I'm hoping someone would know.
I have 88 Thousand on the car right now.

The shop I work at usually recommends between 30 and 50 thousand miles between flushes. I flushed my 2001 Maxima at 50 thousand and plan on every 30 after that! But you are correct in saying that dropping the pan and changing the filter does not get all the fluid. The fluid in the torque converter can only be changed with a flush machine or when the tranny is on the ground you can take the converter out and dump the fluid out. I plan on alternating between flushing the trans and dropping the pan to change the filter! That way every 60K the filter is changed and every 60K the fluid in the converter is flushed! It's the best of both worlds in my opinion. But as far as your car I'd get the tranny flushed ASAP because the longer you wait the more likely you are to have trans problems by flushing it! After the fluid gets really nasty, say about 100K or more, the trans is prone to not operating correctly or not at all sometimes when it gets all new fluid. So if you're gonna get it flushed, I'd go ahead and get it done now! Changing the fluid on a consistent basis is the best way to promote long automatic tranny life!

Member "Holy LUV" is correct w one exception.....

Oldsmobiles......every one of those cars i have had and changed the tranny fluid in, it was the end for the trans right then and there. :(

I've learned two things from this
#1. NO more Oldsmobiles for this ol cowboy, period.
#2. If i was forced to have one, then THE last thing I would do is change the trans fluid.

I have a whole ROW of Olds's of all different years in my yard, and not one w a good trans.
So trust me.....I KNOW what I'm talking about here. 8)

Hey Lil Blue! I've never heard of such strange luck with Oldsmobuckets! You don't by any chance have an 80's rear-wheel drive Cutlass Supreme 2-door with a V-8, do you? I wouldn't be surprised, you seem to have or had everything else!

Hey bighappy! What kind of car are you referring to? Should be safe to change the automatic tranny fluid at 80K!

Its a Buick Regal w/3.8. Ive heard by alot of people that you should forget about it after going that long. It doesnt slip, leak or heat up now and at 128k, Im thinkin itll be just fine.

With all the horror stories I've heard, I think that is one fluid change I'd take a rig into the shop for. Find a place with a good guarantee, if it pukes then they can fix it.

Shouldn't have any problems flushing the Regal's tranny at 80K. I've neither seen nor heard of mid-size GM FWD tranny problems! I've got a 92 Lesabre with 184K on it and the original tranny is just fine!

my ex-wife's Ford Aerostar has over 230,000 miles on it, and it's never been changed. Kind of a moot point by now.

I think I will take it to a shope. I heard from a Napa worker, the tranny has to be pulled in ordred to change the filter.

well whith the older Chevys my buddy runs whith TH350s and TH400s he drains and replaces the fluid every 30,000miles and also upgraded to screw on filters (thier kinda like oil filters and work lost better). Hes never had any problems and hes got one TH400 whith 200,000odd miles on it whith no problems.

if the automatic trans fluid in the car is black you can say good bye to tranny. if you put new tranny fluid in the tranny it will clean the tranny and all the crap will sit on the bottom and let some metal flake in the the tranny go around and mess it up. so if it's black your better off leaving it alone and get a tranny some time. you change it you got your tranny for a couple hundred miles then it will start breaking and making noises.

WheelinGuy is quite correct. If the fluid is that dark you better leave it alone! It will do more harm than good. If it's just a darker red and not real burnt smelling you ought to be just fine. The Dodge front wheel drive cars are most finicky about the tranny fluid. My mom's 96 Increpid has 96'000 miles on it and the tranny's never been touched. I wouldn't touch it with a 39 and a half foot pole! I can't afford to buy her a transmission for Christmas!
