I worked for State of Idaho Parks and Rec and then Fish and Game 1978 thru 1982.
FIRST Luv I ever drove belonged to them and was brand new. I was one of 3 ppl each year to go w the big bosses to the dealership and pick up the new Luvs.And..... I was assigned a new truck for each year and it was totally mine to take care of . 8)
I wanted one for a personal vehicle THEN but could not afford :(

So IKE is not alone........I'm an ol fart too LOL

Well guys, i guess i am an old Fart? I would have to be old to be an original owner i guess?

I bought my LUV on March 10, 1979 in Clearwater Florida. I paid $7,890.00 for it. It is a Yellow 4x4 Mikado with every option you could get except bucket seats. It has factory air, skid plates, below eye level mirrors, 4x4 decal package, am/fm radio, chrome step bumper, and front bumper guards.

When the 4x4 LUV first came out they were very hard to get . Each dealer could only get one truck at first. As soon as i saw the first one, i knew i had to have it! But i wanted one with factory air. I live near Cincinnati Ohio. I called every Chevy dealer within 100 miles looking for a 4x4 Luv with factory air, but not one dealer had one? And most of the dealers i called didn`t even have a 4x4 and some didn`t even know they made a 4x4 luv!

After 2 months of searching, i finally thougt of something. I said, if there is a 4x4 LUV anywhere in this country with factory air, it has to be in Florida? So i called a friend living in Florida and asked him to call every Chevy dealer he could find and see if you can find a 4x4 Luv with Air! He called me back three days later and said he called all the dealers in his area and none of them had a 4x4 Luv with air!! But, he talked to one dealer who said he knew a dealer in Miami who had a 4x4 Luv with factory air in his showroom. Well, i called the dealer and asked him if it was true and he said yes i know where a truck like you want is and it so happpens that dealer owes me a favor, so i can probably dealer trade with him and get that truck if you are serious? I said i am serious as a "heart attack" i want the truck!! He said OK,send me $100 deposit to prove you want it. I sent the money and he called me on Wednesday and said i have your truck on the lot in Clearwater. I said "great" and i will fly down there Saturday to pick the truck up and i told him my flight number and told him to pick me up at the airport. He said OK, but the sticker on the truck is $7,890.00, don`t come down here with any less than that because we will not come down one dime off the sticker!! I said thats fine with me, but if i fly down there and you tell me you sold the truck to someone else, you got an "ass kicking" coming!!

Well the rest is History, i flew down to Florida and drove my shiney new Jasmine Yellow 4X4 LUV back home to Ohio! And i have been in "LUV" EVER SINCE!!

Ike

When my grandfather brought his LUV in Sept. of 1980, it took Chevy forever to get his order right, he went to Cake Chevrolet, in Winslow, AZ, ordered a 1980 LUV 4x4 w/ buckets, air and every option avalible for that year, and he wanted it that Orangey-Red color . 2 weeks later he got a call from Cake that they had his truck, he went down to the dealer to get his truck, well they had "a" truck there all right but not the one he ordered, the one there was a Blue one w/ a bench seat, my grandpa said "screw that, get me the truck i ordered!" (note: my grandpa had already paid the full purchase price of the truck, which = $8000, Cake Chevy tried riping him off by giving him a less valuable truck) So another 2 weeks went by and he got another call from Cake saying they had his truck, he gets down there for the second time, and they accually have the right truck. right color, all the options, the buckets, and factory a/c, but then he looked at the odo, it had 500 miles on it, the truck had been driven from a dealer in California, all the way to AZ, so as you can imagine my grampa was pretty pissed, second time Cake had tried screwing him over!!!! 2 weeks later they finaly get the right truck, with no miles on it , needless to say my grandpa is never gona buy a Chevy from Cake Chevrolet of Winslow, AZ. and so 197,000 miles, and one rebuild later the truck has become mine, starting back in the state were the whole adventure begain. ( my grandpa moved from AZ to OK in 1983, the truck went with him, and stayed there up until this past summer when he gave it to me and I drove it back to AZ)

well hope you all enjoyed the story, now i must excuse myself and finish putting on the 3" lift (grandpa would be proud!!!)

Chapter 2: The drive back to Ohio!

Up until the time i finally found my 4xi4 Luv in Florida, I had never driven a Luv or even rode in one. The salesman picked me up at the airport and drove me straight to the dealership where i paid for the truck, looked inside it, but never drove it until the next morning when i started home in it. I checked into a motel close to the dealer but i was so excited i couldn`t sleep and should have just started home the day i got the truck.

But anyway, i was up bright and early and couldn`t wait to get started home in my new Luv.

When i arrived at the dealership that morning, i threw my things in the cab, shook hands with the salesman, climbed in the cab and fired her up for the first time. :D
Now, up until this time, i had never owned a truck or any other 4 cylinder powered vehicle. I had always owned 396 Chevells, one 427 Corvette and other high performance cars. No four "bangers"!!
I pulled out onto the 4 lane in front of Jim Quinlan Chervrolet and hammered down on all 80 horses under that big 4x4 decal on the hood!
Wow, was i sick! I said to myself, my god, what have i got here??? I will never get home in this damned thing!!l lol! :(

But, other than the power, i loved everything else about my shiney little LUV. Besides, it was too late to back out now, so i just settled back, turned the "air" on and watched the nearly 1100 miles go "slowly by!

The 4xi4 Luv had only been out for a short time when i got mine and very few people had seen one at that time. I was amazed at the how people looked at the truck and waved and smiled and gave me a "thumbs up" when they passed me. I don`t think i passed one vehicle on I-75 all the way home! :?

I never got over 55mph all the way home. And i stopped many more times than i needed to and it took me nearly 24hrs. to get home. So , the engine in my truck wasn`t completely cooled down for the first 24hrs. i owned it.

As the miles and the years rolled by, i got used to the 80hp and fell deeper and deeper in love with my LUV. Now 26 years and 165,000 later, i still have my LUV. But, sadly i will probably never drive it again. Even though it still runs, it is so rusty that it is not safe to drive and is beyond restoration. But i will probably never get rid of it? I just can`t do it.

Stay tuned for Chapter "3" The Truck pull!!

Ike

I'm almost there. My dad bought my LUV new in '76 and gave it to me in '88. I didn't own it when it was new, but I rode in it. :)
