my luv is still having some problem holding a charge. I've replaced the battery, alternator, and voltage regulator. If I swap to a GM one wire alternator, what do I need to change besides the brackets? Do I just wire it up or do I need to do anything with the old wires?

thanks,

Jess

ok let me clarify what I'm talking about here.

My truck has a 350 and right now I have the luv alternator (new) and the voltage regulator (new) and of course the battery (also new) But for some reason it is still not charging like it should.

Does pully size make a difference about how much voltage the alternator puts out?

I am thinking of just swapping out the luv alternator to change to a GM one wire alternator off my other engine. If I did this, what would I do with the extra wires coming out of the voltage regulator? What are they for? Where to they go?

thanks again and sorry for the confusion

Jess

yes pulley size will affect the alternators output.
Check the wiring diagrams in the info section about the wiring. i think one goes to the batt and is a main feed for the fuse box, one for the charge light and fuel pump and one for... beats me! :D I think it goes to the fuse panel not sure for what though.

do yourself a favor and check for a draw while your looking around under the hood .

tunr the ignition off and make sure that all the accessories are off(domelight...etc.)
then disconect the positive lead to the battery and hook up a test light in between the batt+ lead and the post.

you should have absoloutly no light coming from the test lamp.

you've probably already done this but if your having charging problems,it doesn't hurt to re-check.

how many performance mods does you v-8 have? i had a ford(eech)back when i turned 18 and i had to have a performance batt(1200cca) and a high torque starter to go with my cam (rv)

the stock system just didn't have the power to start the motor without retarding the timing enough to cause a lack of power.

GOOD LUCK JESS

PS. if you decide to go the one wire route...i'd like to buy the stock alt that you bought.....if you don't return it.......

Jess,
Did you get it sorted out yet? I hope so. If not, does the charge lite have a good bulb in it? I had the same problem, did a GM alt swap and my LUV still did not charge. turned out to be the bulb. turn on the ignition without starting the truck and see if the bulb lites up.
If you do swap the alt. I think you can just tape off the wires you do not use, but I am not shure. when I did mine I untaped the harness and removed everyyhing related to the factory charging system. It just wanted to start fresh with new everything.
Go to this link http://www.autorewire.com/ scroll to the bottom of the page and check out the GM 10SI alternator links, good stuff. I was going to go one wire till I saw this. You can use just about any GM alternator. I found a super clean one at the pick a part for $15. Good luck!
John
